I don't agree with much of what you have said in this thread, but I think this is most certainly correct.
The Shah was NOT overthrown because he was a tyrant, (As Carter's ruling Democratic Party and western liberals and leftists kept arguing for.). He was overthrown because he was a Western-style modernizer in a country where the majority of people were Shia and traditional and rejected those modernizations. I think it also important to understand that what President Carter did was not necessarily how ALL of the American people felt. Most of us conservatives thought Carter a weak president with a dangerous foreign policy of undercutting our traditional allies like the Shah, (despite Carter's hypocritical words of praise for him.) while coddling our enemies like the Soviet empire. In the end, the Shah was too sick and too demoralized to do what he should have done, IMHO, which was order his army to restore order.
