IRAN-140 aircraft ready to join air fleet

The IRAN-140 turboprop aircraft will join Iran’s air fleet in the near future.

The Iranian-made plane has two propellers, runs 500km/h and is capable of carrying 52 passengers for more than 1,800nm, the Mehr News Agency reported.

The first IRAN-140 aircraft was introduced in 2003.

Five domestically manufactured IRAN-140 planes were completed in October 2008 to increase the Air Force's transportation capacity and upgrade the marine surveillance capabilities.

Now, the first eight are believed to be ready to enter service with Iran's domestic airlines.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said late last year that his ministry was ready to mass-produce the IRAN-140.

The plane comes at a time when a ban on the ageing Tupolev Tu-154 comes into effect across the country in connection with recent incidents involving those aircraft.

The IRAN-140 aircraft will soon be used in the Tehran-Isfahan route, and later on, in other routes throughout the country.
