Far removed from the photo-shopped images of ‘Shining India’, lies a dark and sinister shadow that stalks the Indian Republic. The spectre of the Naxalite threat now has middle-class urban Indians nervous as they watch increasingly worrisome media reports of the repeated failures of Indian Security Forces in containing the ‘red menace’ in the jungles and hinterlands of India.

What was once only a peripheral threat to the Indian State has now reached a critical mass that has left even the ivory-tower Indian elites in New Delhi with furrowed brows. An embarrassing problem once ignored and neglected has now broken out into the worlds glare. And rightly so. As the vigour of the Reds grows from strength to strength, and the impotence of the Indian Army and Paramilitary is increasingly apparent, questions are being raised of the safety and security of India’s nuclear weapons arsenal. Similar concerns were raised internationally only a few months ago when the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan were said to be within spitting distance of Islamabad and Pakistan’s own nuclear arsenal was seen as an obvious target. But whereas the Pakistan Army swiftly and efficiently routed the militants from a standing start within just a few weeks, their colleagues in India have struggled to contain an irresistibly growing Naxalite movement that has pledged to bring New Delhi down.

Is this not a concern for UN or Self Declared Super Powers to chat about it?

Rest assured, Indian Missiles and Nukes are not in hands of military or under control of one entity.

The Naxals you are talking abt are kids as compares to Let or Other Terror Groups.

Besides, The Nukes are Unsafe in Two conditions, which is applicable to pakistan as well.

#1. Military Misutizes their powers , which cant happen in India as Warheads are with BARC.

#2. Some Extremist group gains control, or Some Terror Group gets Nukes.

Both cant happen in India as, Terror Groups are NOT supported in India like they are in pakistan where Osama is a Hero.

I dont say that Nukes are Unsafe in Pak, But then In India too, they are something which is of the Greatest Concern and Attention.

Naxals never dared to attack a military installation till date. the day they do it, it would be their doom.

IMPOTENCE? You know Indian army dont even consider Maoist worth fighting. Just to reiterate, INDIAN ARMY HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN ACTION AGAINST NAXALISTS AND MAOISTS. Its been CRPF and CoBRA.

Do me a favor, mail this link to the editor

Lame attempt at trying to stir up hysteria........

The fact that the author does not realize that the army is not even involved in Anti-Naxal operations itself discredits the entire post.....

Besides, I really would like to see a bunch of ill-trained, bow-arrow wielding naxals take on a professional million man army and an airforce that can bomb them back to the neanderthal age!!!

To the poster of this "alarming news"......quit while you're ahead.....
Your post is about to be ripped into.....

Oh and as far as them taking over nuclear installations, I think they have enough coming their way at the moment.

-70,000 paramilitary.
-COBRA
-Special forces.

BBC NEWS | South Asia | India in new anti-Maoist strategy

The Indian government has agreed on a new tactic to fight Maoists who are operating in several states.

Officials say state police are to take the lead in co-ordinating operations against the Maoists, while central forces are only to lend assistance.

The decision came hours after at least 17 policemen were killed in a battle with Maoist insurgents in the western state of Maharashtra.

India says that Maoist insurgents pose its biggest security threat.

They operate in many states and say they are fighting for the rights of the poor and landless.

Remanded

Maoists have a presence in over 223 of India's 600-odd districts across 20 states, according to the government.

Around 70,000 central paramilitary troops along with elite commando and special forces will be deployed in the upcoming operation against the rebels.

The troops will be provided cover by the army and armoured air force helicopters.

A senior government official told the BBC that the operation is to be launched within weeks to "wipe out the top leadership" of the rebels and secure some 40,000 sq km of territory that is being held by them.

The government believes there are less than 20 top rebel leaders, nearly 30 commanders, and some 12,000 cadres.

A senior home ministry official pointed out that last month the government managed to arrest top Maoist leaders Amit Bagchi and Kobad Ghandy, taking the total number of arrested "politburo members" to seven.

The Maoist leadership has consistently maintained that their strength has been "overestimated" by the government.

What is not contested is that areas where the insurgents wield most influence are mostly poor and dominated by tribes people. They are also areas widely seen as being rich in mineral wealth which the Maoists say is being handed over to corporate firms while the poor remain deprived.

The government has come to the conclusion that development work can take place in the affected areas only after the rebels are defeated.

A recent statement by the Maoist leadership called upon its armed cadres to paralyse government functioning, attack and kill police and paramilitary soldiers and destabilise administrative functioning.

There have been over 1,400 cases related to violence by Maoists between January and August, according to official records. Nearly 600 civilians have died over that period.

In the latest attack on Thursday evening, a group of Maoists attacked a police station in Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra.

At least 17 policemen, including a top commander, were killed in the battle. It was not clear whether the rebels suffered any casualties.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told police chiefs last month that a campaign against the rebels had failed to produce results

Finally they're taking things seriously, it won't be long now.

Responsible people know that nuclear weapons are safe in both Pakistan and India.

This guy is just having some tongue-in-cheek fun to point up the absurdity of similar claims about Pakistan by Indian and Western media "experts".

It is fun, though, to watch some Indians get riled up about it...

I doubt that India's nuclear weapons face any threat from this group. I laughed when I read that Taliban may take over Pakistan's nuclear weapons because it is not as simple as it is made to sound like in the media.

if one has the strength to bear with the international pressure, it will be arrogant and hegemonic, if one does not have the power to go against the pressure, they will bend down their dignity to beg for deisolation, that is the iron rule india believes, so be it, no one can stop it from expanding nuclear arsenal to undermine regional stability and balance

no one can stop it from expanding nuclear arsenal to undermine regional stability and balance

Same goes for Pakistan as well. No one can stop us either from expanding our Nuclear Power Capabilities .

Not unless you depend on them, and right now, Pakistan isn't in a position to defy the international community. Eg: The US will help bail Pakistan out, but they have their own terms and conditions.

Desperate attempt to settle scores with India, the author should go through chanakya niti before trying tit for tat with Indians...

You guys have no idea of threat of nuclear facilities in India falling on hands of Maosits. The poor kids, most of them who are illiterate will invade New Delhi with vintage rifles and piper bombs. Airforce is called in for action.

US has threatened India to strike on nuclear facilities before they fall to Maoists. Also, US asked to promptly deliver nuclear protection procedures to them for inspection or else?:victory:
