India is under the grip of a yoga fever, thanks to the massive initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The United Nations General Assembly has declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. This decision followed the resolution adopted on December 11 2014, after Modi’s address to the UN General Assembly. The resolution received unprecedented support from 177 countries of the world.
While the social media is abuzz with the Yoga Day preparatory photos, a tweet from the PM with a photo of sailors undertaking yoga sessions on board INS Kamorta has gone viral. The PM tweet showed the navy men performing yoga on the heli-deck of the ship. INS Kamorta is the first in series of home-grown anti-submarine corvettes built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, Kolkata. The ship was handed over to Indian Navy last year.
Indian Navy says it has been motivated by the words of Modi. Quoting the PM, Navy said that Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment. Navy says it has sensitized its community on the maiden International Day of Yoga through a message relayed widely to units at dispersed geographical positions in India and overseas.
“Our units located as far as the Mediterranean Sea on the West, the Western Pacific Ocean on the East and the Southern Indian Ocean in the South will participate in observing the occasion – and with a unique design,” says a naval spokesperson. Navy plans to conduct Yoga sessions at 7 am on Sunday (the exact time at which the occasion will be observed at Rajpath, New Delhi). In Mumbai, the naval officers and sailors are marking the Yoga Day in a grand manner. The rehearsals are already begun on board INS Viraat. Meanwhile, the United Nations tweeted saying: “We’re counting down to the 1st-ever Intl ?#?YogaDay? on Sunday.” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said that by proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, the General Assembly has recognized the holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations.
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) too has geared up to organise the largest ever demonstration of Yoga by a uniformed organisation on a single day concurrently at multiple venues all across India.
