Chief of Naval staff Admiral Nirmal Verma said the importance of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) has increased manifold in recent times. He said several new projects were coming to the ENC.

The Navy Chief was addressing a gathering after presenting the President's gallantry and non-gallantry awards to navy personnel at a naval investiture ceremony held at Eastern Naval Command (ENC) here on Wednesday. Thirty-three personnel were awarded gallantry and non-gallantry awards.

Admiral Verma said the naval ships INS Shivalik and INS Satpura had been commissioned and INS Sahyadri would be commissioned soon. He said the Indian Navy had displayed exemplary courage in checking piracy menace in the Indian Ocean. Verma said the naval ships had intercepted many pirate trawlers and ships near the Lakshadweep coast.

The Navy Chief received the salute at a parade of 24 platoons and inspected a 50-men armed guard. ENC vice-admiral Anil Chopra, flag officers, commanding officers of various ships and establishments and a large number of service and civilian personnel and their families attended the function. The investiture ceremony was held here after a gap of three years.

They understand the Mantra... "If you want to grow, you need to cut dependencies on Foren Maal" ... Hope IA and IAF will follow the same and include more and more desi product....

what's the major difference between p17 and p17A follow ons ? What are the latter's definite advantages ?

Covered deck, less clutter, less antennas by using multi-function radar - in short better stealth in the class of the best available today and better air defense. The other major institutional gain is the mastery of modular shipbuilding in more than one shipyard.

These are the concepts, the final design and config is not yet ready AFAIK.

Will incorporate more stealth features, less cluttered mast, 3D MF-STAR AESA (same as on P-15A), will incoperate newer processing technology, new weapons (Aegis is highly likely) and It will have a covered mooring deck and flush deck mounted (VLM) weapon systems.

I'm pretty sure it will be Mazagon Dock Limited again constriction will most likely start this year and with new modular construction techniques being used by MDL and others the first ship will probably be commissioned in mid-late 2015/16.

An interesting fact is that P-17A frigates will cost close to $1 BN EACH!! And P-15A/B will cost in the region of $1-1.2 BN EACH!! Who'd have thought IN would be operating such advanced and pricey ships 2/3 decades ago??!!!

I have house in Sahyadri ranges in Maharashtra :D
