India's first ballistic missile submarine the INS Arihant will go on "deterrent patrol" or sail with a full complement of nuclear-tipped missiles when she is commissioned in 2012. "The nuclear triad will be there when it is commissioned," navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said at a press conference in New Delhi.

This is the first time a service chief has commented on the deployment of a nuclear weapon platform. Launched last year, the Arihant is the first of a series of five indigenously constructed ballistic missile submarines (SSBN). The Indian SSBN is meant to form the third and most survivable leg of a troika of land, air and sea-based platforms enunciated by the Indian nuclear doctrine. The submarines are being constructed at the high security Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam. "We expect to have it going in two years, end 2011 or 2012," Admiral Verma said. "We are going with the float as far as things go," he said in an attempt to answer speculation that technical glitches with the submarine would delay its commissioning.

Deterrent patrol means a long and lonely vigil where the submarine sails submerged and undetectable for weeks on end with its load of nuclear weapons. It is meant to 'deter' an adversary from launching a first strike on the nation. Only four nations-the US, Russia, France and UK have SSBNs sailing on deterrent patrols. China has two SSBNs and is building three more but its submarines have never sailed on deterrent patrols.

Admiral Verma's predecessor was the first to confirm the existence of the highly classified Advanced Technology vessel (ATV) project two years back. Security analysts however believe that the navy chief's estimates of induction could be optimistic. The Arihant is yet to begin her sea trials or even fire up her nuclear reactor. Missile tests will follow after the submarine completes her sea trials which could take up to a year. Two nuclear-tipped missiles are being developed for the Arihant class. A 700-km submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) called the K-15 or the B-05 has been tested eight times and is in serial production. A 3500 km SLBM, the K-4 has been tested once and will be fielded by around 2017. A second test of the K-4 is expected in the next two months.

So my source was correct..K-15 really is in Production stage...

This is f'in Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! :tup::tup::tup:

Great news! We should construct almost all of them ASAP...and deploy all of them in Indian ocean with deadly k-4 Nuclear tipped missiles of 3500km range on deterrent patrol.

can anyone tell me how many Nuclear tipped K-4's can be fitted in arihant and its class of 5 other nuclear submarines??

.
^^ arihant can be equipped with 16 k 15 or 4 k4 missiles.

i read this on Livefist

This article is from 2010
The progress which we have made in Arihant project will ensure that the sub will enter service in 2012
The reactor of INS arihant was activated only in Jan 2011 , while the sub has begun its sea trials as of may 2011

Where the article is incorrect is in Number of SSBN , when the construction began in 2001 only 3 Arihant class Subs were ordered , while a 4th one was ordered in 2010 , there is no official acknowledgement record of a 5th SSBN being ordered
The first 2 subs ie INS Arihant and INS Arhidaman will carry 12 K15 Ballistic Missiles with a range of 700-1900 Km , the Last 2 yet unnamed Subs will carry 6-8 K4 Ballistic Missiles with range of 3500-4000 Km and 4 MIRV warheads
K15 Missile is currently in production with Indian Navy having ordered 24 units to equip 2 SSBN

I don't believe this a weak prime minister like MMS will not allow military to hold the red button with nuclear tipped missiles ready to launch.

.
Not off-topic, but we have five SSBNs on patrol.

This article is kinda misleading about our SSBN.

You took the words out of my mouth, bhai. I too am wondering whether Sonia Gandhi (ignore MMS, he's nothing) would allow Admiral Verma to wield such power. One must remember that the Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty was never on good terms with the military tri-services. Be it Nehru, Indira, Rajiv or Sanjay, time and again many military commanders have expressed their dislike for the dynasty's imperialist and tyrannical ways of forcing the military to be under its shoes.

In recent times, only ex-ACM Naik had the nuts to actually stand tall and stare into the eyes of the Maino Mafia.

Would be better if the deterrent patrols start when at least 3 of our nuke subs are operational ...Arihant , Aridhman and the leased Nerpa . Then again the sooner the deterrent is in place , the more secure Indian policy makers and military thinktanks can feel . All depends on the geo-strategic scenario when Arihant gets operational.

It is about Arihant mainly.

China has two SSBNs and is building three more but its submarines have never sailed on deterrent patrols.

The article is a year old. Considering your manufacturing speed, I think the 5 that you got right now are the same that the article says.

Nuclear weapons are political statements not like a canon to be used in a battle field. The control of Nuclear Weapons has to always remain with the civilian government.

And what is wrong in the military being under the control of a civilian government? Military personnel should deal only with military matters and not try to interfere with the ruling of the country.

Military should never be given a free hand but should be empowered in every possible way to perform its tasks.
