If the PAF's interest is genuine, then I think there can be ways around the issue... For example, in exchange for some quasi licensing fee to Russia, the PAF could get Shenyang Flankers from China.

If you're using it for a set of specific roles, such as stand-off range strike (e.g. carrying ALCM) or long-range air patrol over the sea, then the maintenance cost can be managed. One wouldn't need to have the aircraft undertake as many sorties - nor as frequently - as the JF-17 or F-16 in this scenario.

It would be troublesome if 50%+ of our fighter fleet is comprised of the Flanker and we depend on it for air defence and other tasks that require a quick turnaround time and frequent sorties.

Now that US and India have signed a defense pact that allows each other to use their territories, do you think Russia will still resist an offer from Pakistan to open up its defense market to Pakistan? Though Pakistan's purchasing power is not as big as that of India but there are other interests as well which could well force Russia to ease up with the restrictions. For Pakistan this would be a great diplomatic and strategic win.
Pakistan should make all strides to get SU-35 even if its expensive to maintain or comes with a price. The sole reason will be that such purchase will open Russian markets for future items and also this will further dent Indo Russian relations which should be a priority for us. Time to correct the mistakes of the past when we chose US over Russia and opened our bases for U2 spy missions.

Post #225 and adding to it, PAF has already done much better than before in the subject of "Tailored Made/asked as per Need" by which, quality wise, PAF has done much better against the rival in past so make sure, ifffffffffff we go for e.g SU-35, it would be much different than what India or any rival think of.

The Russians will only warm up to cold hard cash. That said - and this is purely baseless speculation from my end - Pakistan could have received some financing support from a third party. China has more of a direct strategic stake in Pakistan than Russia, and if defence planners in Beijing and Islamabad came to the conclusion that Flankers are necessary in Pakistan, then one way or another, Flankers will come. Note, financial support doesn't mean aid. I mean, China could be providing the upfront capital, but Pakistan would be paying back China in installments and potentially even other concessions, such as first priority in other defence contracts or more access to the Pakistani market (in terms of exporting Chinese goods).

What are the chances that China will use their fleet of SU 35's for the security of Gwadar? And would Russia agree to Chinese Su 35's being leased to Pakistan?
