Indonesian President inspects JF-17 fighter aircraft

. .
Well, Indonesia is a non block country who don't follow the West or East since the cold war era. But at the time of Soeharto, we lean to the west. So we have a lot of old Western weapons that we bought or procure from the United States from the start of Soeharto raise of power.

But around the '90 we got an arm embargo from the West because of East Timor, and at the end of Soeharto era, we lost East Timor. At that time, Australia support East Timor and sent their army to the island, and then secure the referendum with the result of East Timor left our country. Even today Australia still has a hidden agenda to support Papua independent. But right now, they put aside their agenda because they want to use Indonesia as their meat shield against China.

Beside that we have a rival at our northern border. It's Malaysia. We have some islands and border that contested with them.

And at the end, we have suspicious to China because of their 9 dash line, and how we have an incident with their coast guard at Natuna, when their stupid fisherman came to Natuna to stole our fish, and their coast guard interfere, and their government claim that Natuna water was just their traditional fishing spot. A not wise diplomatic action by China.

So basically we are a neutral country that positioned at the middle of the rivalry between China and the west. We can become the gate to close China from entering the Indian Ocean if they become hostile to us, but we can also become the guarantee of Chinese trade route if they are good to us. At the other side, the Western countries, like US and Australia want us to join their club to complete Obama grand ambition that we called as China pivot. If China become crazy and want to sink Aussie, they hope that our 200 millions people can become the frontline Soldiers to fights against China.

But if we talk about aircraft, we have our criteria. First, our territory is vast. But most of them are water. So we need an aircraft that capable to operate at long range, and we need an aircraft that can be used on a maritime mission. Like attacking a surface ships with AShM.

To be honest, I think Flanker fit to this mission criteria perfectly. But we still have to keep our relation with the west. So F-16 is also a good choice.

Serial 17-236 with IFR. Good
The new design of IFR looks more of the works than the prototype.

. . .
That's same as currently adopted but compare this disaster.

sd-10+JF-17+Thunder+Fighter+Jets+Fitted+sd-10+bvr+aam+c-802a+antiship+missile+Fixed+In-Flight+Refuelling+(IFR)+Probe+pakistan+air+force+paf+il-78+tanker+blcok+I+II+III+IV(1).jpg

Trust me, for once I thought, it is psed even still can't believe it. PAF was evaluating two brands, checked both and had the right one.

Indonesian air force indeed have a plan to add 3 fighter squadrons in the future aside from current negotiation on SU-35 to replace F-5, although the leading contender is F-16.

Any comparison between F-16 and JF-17?

Its not just aircraft but you have to look at the whole package. Would the western nations be willing to give you the right weapons like BVR and standoff missiles for sea operation considering you are a island nation? You can get all that with JF17 and I doubt Americans will give you such armaments considering their relationship with Australia.

f16 would be right choice because you guys can get that a price of thunder, if opt for used one as you did before

i dont see thunder going to indonesia

.
JF 17 can be used to replace hawks, KFX/IFX to adding more squadrons. I dont think Indonesia Air Forces is just content with 10 to 15 fighter squadrons by 2030 at least.

f16 newer aircrafts are atleaast 3x times expensive though and weapons are more expensive, maintaince freedom will be less

Nobody knows better than PAF who has been operating F-16s since the 80s and PAF has been actively involved in the JF-17 project. So rest assured all that knowledge of operating F-16s have been incorporated within the JF-17. As a result today JF-17 performs as good as an F-16 and even supersedes F-16 in certain aspects.
As for the upgrades i highly doubt more updates will be available for the F-16. Lockheed is struggling to find a customer for F-16, they last attempt was India with block 70 but India knows well that the life of this plane is over. If no orders come F-16 plant will shut down anyway. JF-17 on the other hand in entering block 3.
I hope Indonesia makes the right choice keeping in view their requirements.

Can JF-17 do this ?

Launch 1000 KM ALCM which capable of both surface and Sea targets which Indonesia looking ?

Can Launch Battle proven PGM or carry this amount of armament or has POD integrated as of now ? What PGM Pakistan can offer to Indonesia with JF-17 ? BVR? WVR ?

, in this video if you add 30-40, network warfare capable block two or even better block 3 air craft guided by 1-2 AWACS , armed with BVR's, the balance would definitely tilt towards Indonesia albeit only in terms of defence. Iam speculating that chances of the sale of thunders are high , they could form the quantitive Part of the Indonesian air force , supporting offence ops of the su 35's , while also bringing strong anti shipping abilities especially if you add cm 400 to the mix.,

Watch the video I suggest. F16 would be great yet they would be strings attached , would have lesser range harpoons , no chance of super sonic anti ship warfare , would need western aerial refueling tankers and awacs, would not be able to perform network centric warfare with the Su's,
It all adds up

Maintenance and freedom restrictions is only for Pakistan. Look at UAE turkey and proposed sale of F-16 to india . The most favoured nations have a much larger freedom to operate their F-16 without strings attached

And JF-17 would be able to do all of this which you say F-16 cant.? they are already operating F-16 along with SU-30 and using AIM-120 C. What advantages SD-10 A can provide over AIM-120 C ?

i dont expect indonesia to get free hand either
looking at history and smaller sale

you cant compere UAE who funded whole block 60 program and turkey which is actually a partner country in falcon to pakistan and indonesia!

UAE spending on block 60 program will be higher than what we will spend on whole thunder program
