WTF with the title of this thread. I can show you a bunch articles in Indonesian who clearly said Indonesian Air Forces is very pleased with F-16 performances, even when being embargoed the F-16 is still keep flying and that's the testament of F-16 resilient and worthiness. I know some higher ups people in Indonesian Air Force branches who clearly indicates and made preparation planning about to adding another squadron of newly built F-16 Viper if the budget permitted in the first place.

Su-35 is fill the Heavy Fighter class niche in our Air Forces, the same class with F-15 fighter the Singapore operated today. To have a multirole heavy fighter is a must given our large air space to controlled and wide ranging missions and challenge our Air Forces must be taken into considerations. We can't rely all of our type of fighter into medium class of fighter as they clearly have several limitation inherent with their design and roles, but we can't afford to have all heavy fighter Air Forces in the same times.

US fighters is still hold the competitive edge in quality build whatever the competitor says, recent Malaysian experience had clearly told so, in 1992-1994 periods they bought two different aircraft in same class, namely Mig-29 and F-18 Hornet, but today the Migs is being retired meanwhile the Hornet is still keep flying and mulling to be upgraded soon. Although Malaysian initially bought 18 Mig-29 and only 8 Hornets but in the end the 8 is still flying and rocking.

Don't give up, Indonesian Air Defense Command is still in search for Air Superiority Fighter, the slots is for three squadrons. That's why Eurofighter Typhoon and Rafael still bothering to compete in F-5 replacement projects although they had known beforehand Flanker had the upper hand.

well, Typhoon will be a better choice for Indonesia even though it's more expensive. However, we have offered to localize production\assembly locally for Indonesia. So overall a good choice for Indonesia.

We have already bought 24 refurbished F 16 Block 52, so we are supposed to operate 33 F 16 in 1-2 years from now.

Su 35 acquisition is a good decision since it is a heavy fighter with much longer operation reach than F 16 V. It is also a wise decision in my opinion since it means we dont put all of our eggs in one basket.

First order is for 8 planes, and if we are satisfied with the performance, we will likely complete the number until 16 as our MoD said recently. Our current Su 27/30 number is 16, so I predict we will have 32 Su family until 2024.

2024-2029 will be the time to manufacture KFX/IFX block 1 until 50 units. 2029 above is to manufacture KFX/IFX block 2 and 3 respectively. (if the program is success and our economy keep growing + a supportive government for domestic defense industry).

Heavy fighters spot, in my view, will not be filled by KFX/IFX program thought. I believe our heavy fighters acquisiton will be given to Russian plane since we have already been familiar with the plane, so this decision ( 8 su 35 ) will also likely affect our future acquisition for our heavy and long range fighter. As having huge area to defend just like Russia, this type of plane is a must though.

First of all, people need to realise F-16 and Su-35 is two different category fighter.

F-16 is a multirole fighter while Su-35 is an air superiority fighter.

Buying one rather than other could be outside political decision, and depending on what they are replacing for, Su-35 could be a logical choice if what the Indonesian is looking for a Air Superiority Fighter replacement.

Do aware, Indonesia is a political ambiguous country which do not have any preference to any bloc or alignment. This is actually not much people can talk about.

Excellent points and such was my first thought. The IAF already operates the SU-27/30 so it only makes sense that they would follow that up with the more advanced SU-35. As much airspace as they need to patrol, it is better suited than the F-16 which is more optimally, a fighter-bomber.

F-16 is a single engine fighter, Su-35 is a twin engine heavy, he seems not knowing that, and that's saying something there.

I believe Indonesia has had seen some embargoes/sanctions in thepastregarding the East Timor issue.
