Indonesia Slams Asean Failure to Reach Resolution on South China Sea Disput

Philippines did not send any military vessels, just a coast guard cutter.
Also, there were some maids on the ships. They were hoping that Chinese ships would transport them to Hong Kong and thus save some air fare.

South East Asian countries are generally very poor. They need to work with both US and China give them a hand. Why restrict business with one market if you can sell to both the largest and the 2nd largest market on earth.

You are talking about trade in black and white terms. Either you trade with me or that country. It is not cold war similar to US/USSR. This one is more complex with lots of grey areas. And when I talk about TPP, U.S is trying to forge a formidable trade alliance - Japan, US, Korea, Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore including. As far as your statement about the 2nd largest market, Japan is the 2nd largest consumer market. It is predicted that only around 2020 will China overtake Japan as 2nd largest consumer market with a market value of $7 billion.

Do you really think China's economy only relies on export?

In fact China can import an entire India annually. :coffee:

The 2nd largest consumer market in the world has a market value of only seven billion?

China knows that it only has to buy one ASEAN member to sabotage the organization. It is only sad that Cambodia sold its soul cheap to China. Now, the fate of ASEAN rests on the cheap decision of another member country. Cambodia's tolerance of China's aggressiveness will be their downfall.
What China does is DIVIDE and CONQUER. She feeds the less developed countries like Cambodia with economic packages so that it can influence these countries into protecting its interest as what is happening now within ASEAN. The best thing for the Philippines,Vietnam is to start developing weapons and beef up its own defence.

Cambodia prefers losing face in exchange for Chinese money. Some kind of international high profile prostitution.

US was immediately asked for debt of Cambodian 400 mill US$. Cambodian were cheated by Chinese:P.

What a shame! Cambodia as the Chair of ASEAN has failed miserably. Cambodia's stance has CHINA written all over it. It was mistake for ASEAN to have an unexperienced and poorer state than the Philippines to lead it. Very disappointing. It can't even protect his fellow ASEAN from the might of bully CHINA! my goodness! What a puppet state! ASEAN is so proud to model itself from the EU but in reality it can't unite! That is a stark contrast to the EU where they are all united. Shame on Cambodia, better replace them as chairman of the ASEAN , nothing will happen favorable to all members if still Cambodia holds the chairmanship. This nation can't protect the interest of it's associates.
ROFLMAO. I am glad you are so pissed off while I am smiling and applauding China's brilliant secret hand in ASEAN to uphold its interests in the South China Sea. Well done, China! :yahoo:

To me, Cambodia is not losing face. Warming up to China is more beneficial than sleeping in bed with very poor, small countries in the Southeast.

I laugh at the Indians getting their panties in a bunch over matters unrelated to them.

Er.........how is this unrelated to India?

Are you aware of the volume of trade ships passing through SCS?

East-Asia is slowing emerging are larger trading partner than EU for India, why wouldn't India be concerned about her trade?

India's look-east policy is for larger part about trade, for which SCS dispute is a hurdle.

1962 must have hurt alot.

1962 didn't come as a surprise,may be a shock to Nehru.

Whatever we Indians learnt from 1962 mostly prevented China from intervening in 1971 war.

The failure to come to terms on a joint communique is unprecedented in the history of ASEAN ministerial meetings , says Carlyle Thayer, a specialist on ASEAN affairs at the University of New South Wales.

Thayer also says the failure to draft even a basic statement this week raises more fundamental questions for ASEAN.

“ASEAN has stood for being the guardian of South East Asia’s regional autonomy. Trying to provide the insulation against the intrusion of great powers," Thayer said. "What this indicates is that China has managed to break that insulation and influence one particular country. That’s going to affect any issues that begin to touch on China.”

Thayer says the issue may have exposed a rift among the ASEAN countries that have territorial disputes with China, and those that rely on China for trade. Cambodia has received hundreds of millions of dollars in soft loans and investment from China.

Still, ASEAN ministers downplayed the issue while acknowledging their concern Friday. Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa’s comments Friday were more tempered after he called the failure to reach a joint statement “irresponsible”, just a day earlier. He told reporters that the meetings had made him more inspired to push forward on an elusive ASEAN Code of Conduct, or COC, on the South China Sea dispute.

“If anything out of this meeting I am even more determined to push for the COC, so all these side happenings becomes more contextual," Natalegawa said. "Instead of the incidents, the tail wagging the dog, we should have a sense of purpose. We should move forward rather than being sidetracked by incidents.”

ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan stressed the need for members to move quickly on repairing what damage has been done.

“I can’t lay the blame on anyone, declared Pitsuwan. "I think it’s a collective responsibility for us to try to find the solution to this. I consider it a major hiccup. And we will have to recoup from this hiccup very quick and very fast.”

Cambodia remains in the chair for the next ASEAN leaders’ summit, scheduled for November.

To do what? You sir are soooo paranoid. Sparring with China is ultimately unwise. A small-sized country has alot to lose if it keeps "poking sticks" at China. It is not worth it in the long run.

ASEAN must come to a common stand vis a vis China because this division of opinions is going to get them nowhere. For reasons beyond understanding (other than the obvious vice-grip economic aid), Cambodia seems to be so enamored by the Chinese. ASEAN must understand that trade is the secondary priority always compared to national sovereignty and security.

Without a united ASEAN, Southeast is in grave danger.

Yeah, especially true when the call comes from the world greatest DEMOCASTIC country. We (aseans) are doomed like shits! LOLOL...

A clear victory for China.

A wake up call for ASEAN countries, that they can not depend on ASEAN to protect national interest. Some hard strategic thinking will be required.

Trying to stir **** here again right?

Shamungam refered to a "win-win" type of joint concensus, not a "one sided" version as per the Vietnames or Filipinos.

LOLOL at so many pathetic impersonating indians!

The stand of ASEAN, which operates by consensus and like what I said China knows that it only has to buy one ASEAN member to sabotage the organization. Anyway it's still blessing in disguise. At least now we know where we stand and we know who are our real friends in ASEAN (except Cambodia - a confirmed lapdog of China)
