Well Indonesia to have World Class Navy they need to have at least 40 Frigates and Destroyers and at least 16 Submarines along with 40 more FAC and lots of Fighter Jets to back there Navy and Navy can be in great danger if there is no really strong Air Force and also Army to back it up so work has to be done on all three Armed Forces. Japan can be good example to follow but they have lot more area than Japan so they need much bigger Army

Bonefish USV breaks cover [ID14D2] - IHS Jane's 360

Saab and PT Lundin have revealed their Bonefish unmanned surface vessel (USV) technology demonstrator at Indo Defence 2014.

Formally unveiled by Indonesia’s defence minister General (ret.) Ryamizard Ryacudu and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Marsetio in a joint ribbon-cutting ceremony on the first day of the show, the 12m carbon-fibre composite trimaran prototype is set to begin sea trials next month.

Joint development of the Bonefish demonstrator, which can be seen on PT Lundin’s stand (Hall D, 025) began at the start of this year, the concept marrying Saab’s mission systems integration expertise with PT Lundin’s advanced wave-piercing trimaran hullform.

The prototype was built in approximately six months at PT Lundin’s composite boat production facility in Banyuwangi, East Java.

Capable of speeds of up to 40kts, Bonefish is designed to incorporate a wide range of sensors, satellite-based control and a modular payload bay to enable role flexibility.

Potential missions could include anti-piracy, maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, search and rescue, and hydrography.

Peter Carlqvist, head of Saab Indonesia (Hall D, Stand 052), said the collaboration between Saab and PT Lundin represented an exciting opportunity for the two companies.

“Saab has identified the need for a USV that is modular and adaptable according to the mission,” he told the Show Daily. “The wave-piercing trimaran platform developed by PT Lundin is unique with regard to its ability to sustain high speed in high sea states. That is very important for a craft that is going to be out at sea for extended periods by itself.”

Dan Enstedt, president and CEO of Saab Asia-Pacific, added: “We are extremely proud and happy that we were able to unveil this demonstrator at Indo Defence and show a tangible example of co-operation between Saab of Sweden and Indonesian industry.”

Tests and trials of the prototype are expected to run through 2015.

"To be a World Class navy, we need to improve our shipbuilding capability"

we need to learn a lot from any Naval Power in this world, Japan, Britain, France, Netherland, US of A they are a good example in seamanship and Naval Warfare

As an Archipelago, Indonesia's Navy must grow in size. A nation of over 13,000 islands, and with a coastline of over 54,000 kilometers, it must increase its naval fleet force. The current developments is proceeding as planned, and Indonesia needs more Frigates such as the Sigma Class. It should have at least 8 Sigma class frigates, it should increase the number of Bung Tomo Class corvettes from 3 to 10. It should increase the number of Diponegoro Class corvettes from 4 to 10. Later on, I see Indonesia fielding a squadron of Destroyers such as the Akizuki Class GM Destroyer , or the Takanami Class GM Destroyer or the Atago Class GM Destroyer.

.
Indonesia needs to start increasing the amount of money that it spends on defence up to 2% of GDP over the next 10-15 years.

It can use this money to build a formidable air-force and navy to project power over the whole archipelago and surrounding areas.

For the Sigma class, the current plan is we want to build around 16 of them by 2024 or slightly much more later but we want to build at least for that number, Bung Tomo class is just an interim measure to adding the number of combatant hull we want to operate by buying the readily available ships. In near future, at least three to seven years from now, Indonesian Navy want to induct second hand ships to replacing the current Van Speijk class frigate, Type 23 Frigate, Bremen Class and OHP is in our draft now waiting for assessment and research process. To adding the capability of our fleets, the current administration need to obtain some AAW destroyer, and FREMM class is mostly the main candidate. All of those ships chosen as the candidate regarding all of our combatant Naval assets is come from French, Britain and Netherland and for the OHP, if they want giving it for us likely they will be upgraded with European Naval system so we can effectively operate it within our SO.

we want to adding as much as possible if only our budget permit it.

Well, only if you think it is about quantity...

Indonesia should strive for a world class navy, given that it is an island nation.

Indonesian Navy has planned to build 20 PKR (guided missile frigate) in 2014-2024. As for sigmas, their number are increasing

to get the best talent, eligible and in adequate number of manpower is an issue though, our Navy can't compete fairly with Civilian industry to attract the best talent out here. It is very rarely to see a college graduates with specific skills want to joint the Navy voluntarily, given unattractive incentive.

I think tht is a problem shared by many navies. You have to turn serving into something desireable, irrespective of pay. AND lobby for better pay, of course.

This is something the JMSDF had built upon, perhaps the IN can do the same. Government subsidization of further (graduate) education, as well as considerable pay for officers in the navy.
