India’s worst-ever water shortage, and the corruption surrounding it

Karachi’s water woes worsen as Eid approaches

People living in Karachi's Garden took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the water shortage in their area as Eid approaches.

They said that they didn't have any water the whole of Ramazan and their Eid will be spent without it too.

The protest was staged near Garden police headquarters. Some people stormed into the waterboard's office and broke the lock on the doors.

Localized issue. India's situation at this time is far worse for much more people.

Both India and Pakistan are on the same boat, read yesterday that top 15 of the hottest places in the world are in our countries. Good grief! And to think that we still need an ac blanket even in June in my place. Feel for those who have to deal with 50°C and scorching loo winds.

I do feel for those in India suffering from the water crisis. That's why I advocate a reduction in tensions and defense spending. Billions should be spent on water infrastructure in both India and Pakistan. Current state of relations do not benefit the people of the region.

I hear you.
Billions should be spent on water infrastructure in both India and Pakistan.
Along with that we got to address the haphazard and unplanned urbanization that takes a toll on a city's resources and prevent ground water misuse by the affluent sections.

it would not be a favor to us by any stretch of the imagination...india would only be doing itself a favor by reducing the war mongering and reducing the defense budget. you cannot take us on militarily, just get over it. only a massive civil war in Pakistan where the majority is rebelling against the minority would give you any hope of a victory.anything short of that will only repeat more February and March like humiliations for india. those civil war days are long gone and not going to return, india should stop wasting tens of billions of dollars in the hopes of somehow creating a civil war like situation in Pakistan...it is not gonna happen, get over that as well! you are better off by stopping the money wastage on a corrupt to the core indian military establishment and spend it on providing your people's betterment.

Well said.
Both countries are over-populated, hot, water challenged, and spend way too much on their defense expenses. And, as you said, India's even conventional war options are not so great as to cause another 1971, which, as you rightly hinted at, was only possible because of the massive rebellion and the geography. Now, forget the nukes, even conventionally, in a defensive war, Pakistan is not a cake walk for India. The Chinese are supposed to be covering every Indian move against Pakistan via satellites, thus further damaging India's conventional advantage.

Both countries must pull back from the edge of the destruction which is SURELY written on the wall for both countries if not avoided asap and which is climatic in nature. We should go back to where Manmohan-Musharraf left off on Kashmir. We owe it to the hundreds of millions in the Subcontinent whose lives are so wretched at least partly because of the un-ending epic confrontation of the two countries. It's a shame to see that many parts of the Subcontinent look worse than the poorer regions of Sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America or South East Asia.

Most of India has below typical precipitation over the last 180 Days. The worst being the south. Sri Lanka as well looks bad. (NOAA data)

Pakistan is vulnerable to water scarcity as well...but at this point India is in much worse shape... water issues affect much more people in India.

Issues in Karachi are localized...bad urban planning. A large 300 million gallon desalination plant is being fast tracked.

Chai Wala needs to learn from IK. Be a statesmen and accept the peace gesture.

.
This is why we need to include Indus river system also in our river interlinking project and supply its waters to the southern states.

Not really. The case in Pakistan is on a different scale compared to India. That is beside, the point that, you are quoting the summer precipitation data in South India. It is not the average.

River linking projects are good, but linking Indus to any other system violate the Indus Water Treaty. Besides we don't need Indus, there are enough river system that could complement it.

Your personal opinion do not matter. That's besides nationalism, it's what our leaders agreed to and we will respect that. We are not an unstable nation that throws signed treaty when it doesn't suit us. And I don't think the now BJP government will take any steps in that direction. Otoh it'll strictly adhere to the conditions and use up every drop that's committed to us.

Yes and you may or may not be one of them. But there is no collective push by people alter IWT. It's not even in the election manifesto. So, what are you talking about? :what:
