India's third indigenous stealth frigate INS Sahyadri commissioning on July 21 - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy will add teeth to its surface combatants' fleet with the induction of the indigenous stealth frigate INS Sahyadri on July 21 in Mumbai.

INS Sahyadri is the third and the last of the Project-17 warships that India is building at the Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL).

"INS Sahyadri is scheduled for commissioning into the Indian Navy on July 21," a senior navy officer told reporters here on Monday.

The first two ships in the class are INS Shivalik and INS Satpura, which are now on active naval duty, including anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

INS Shivalik had only this month sailed up to China's western Pacific coast on a long-haul deployment and had docked in Shanghai.

The Project 17 warships are christened after hill ranges in India and the 4,900-tonne vessels are one of the most advanced design with stealth features in the Indian Navy stable.

The MDL had laid the keel of INS Sahyadri in March 2003 and launched it in the water in May 2005. The warship had gone out into the Arabian Sea for sea trials earlier this year.

India plans to build seven more warships of this class in the future as a follow-on Project-17A.

The Shivalik class frigates are 142-metre long, 17-metre wide warships that run on two Pielstick 16 PA6 STC diesel engines and two GE LM2500+ boost turbines in combined diesel or gas (CODOG) configuration.

INS Shivalik was commissioned in April 2010 and INS Satpura in August 2011. With the commissioning of INS Sahyadri on July 21, the Project-17 of the Indian Navy stand completed. The three-ship project cost India nearly Rs.10 billion.

The Shivalik class frigates are mounted with an MR-760 Fregat M2EM 3-D air search radar, HUMSA (hull-mounted sonar array), four MR-90 Orekh radar, an ELTA EL/M 2238 surveillance and theatre alert radar, two ELTA EL/M 2221 search-track-and-guidance radar, ATAS-Thales Sintra towed array systems, BEL Aparna fire control radar and BEL Ajanta electronic warfare suite to counter an enemy attack.

These also carry a mix of Indian, Russian, and Western weapons such as the 3 inch Otobreda gun, DTA-53-956 torpedo launchers, RBU-6000 rocket launchers, Shtil surface-to-air missile system with 24 short to medium range missiles, Klub anti-ship cruise missiles, Indian BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, and Israeli Barak-I missile defence system.

The frigates are capable of carrying two helicopters of the Dhruv, Sea King or Kamov varieties.

.
Hey their are not 4,900-tonne vessels their are near 6,800 tonnes.
Anyways you made my day man:chilli::yahoo:

.
^^ then i think 6800 ton weight of Kolkata class destroyers is their empty weight and loaded weight close to 8700 tons

.
2012 excellent year of Indian Navy,IAF & DRDO

But Indian Army & HAL far behind in modernization

.
what is the status of Project-17A ? has the work started? I hope they commission the first of this class in atleast 4yrs from now...it should not take as long as the INS Shivalik took...as most of the design will be same as Project -17 for the Project-17A

.
this year will see the Indian navy inducting 12 major warships . the Iaf also is fast modernizing , its just the army lagging behind.

Project 28 Kamorta at Kolkata (GRSE)

How come 12?? following is the list of 8 ships which i know, which are rest 4??

INS Chakra (SSBN), INS Teg (Frigate), INS Sahyadari (Frigate), INS Kolkata (destroyer), INS Kamorta (corvette), INS Tarkash (frigate) & priced induction of all INS Vikramaditya (AC), INS Arihant (SSBN).

P-17A will include construction of 7 more stealth frigates of indigenous design, it will be constructed with modular technique & i think the work on first ship has started in the year 2011, each ship will cost more than $900 million, India is considering Aegis combat system for the frigates, this will be a deadly combination. First ship maybe inducted in 2016-17 with 1 ship inducted every following year.

P.S. my suggestion for naming these seven ships should be on saptarishis (the seven sages) - Saptarishi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (just a thought)

.
IS Arihanth going to be inducted this year.
how's its trials going on.
one question which generation submarines it will belong to some say 2gen........

Project 17A Stealth Frigates

Introduction
In June 2009, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared a Rs 45,000 crore project to build seven stealth frigates using advanced manufacturing process like modular shipbuilding.

The P17A warships will be India’s most advanced and stealthy frigates,

The ships will be manufactured in India by the Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai (MDL) and the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

"The MoD has informally told us that MDL and GRSE will build Project 17A; we are awaiting [formal sanction]. Once the navy finalizes the size and design of the new frigate, we will decide our build strategy and costing. Then, hopefully, by the end of 2009, the MoD will issue a Request for Proposals (RfP); GRSE and MDL will submit separate quotes; and then the MoD will place a formal order on the shipyards. Construction should start by end-2011," says Rear Admiral KC Sekhar, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of MDL.

Capabilities
The Project 17A frigates will be more advanced and stealthier than the P17 Shivalik class warships currently being inducted into the Navy.

The stealth features will include
Missile silos flush with the deck
Torpedo launchers blending along the sides of the vessel.
Concealed hangar for a Kamov helicopter.

P 17 ships are based on the Project 11356 (Talwar / Krivak IV class) ships being acquired from Russia, and were designed jointly by the Naval Design Bureau (NDB) and Russia's Severnoye Project Design Bureau (Severnoye Proyektno-Konstruktorskoye Bjuro - SPKB), the designers of the N11356 frigate.

Project 17 class ships were manufactured exclusively by MDL. By involving GRSE in the construction of P 17A ships, the DAC hopes to speed up construction of the seven warships as well as create the infrastructure at both the dockyard for modular building of large warships.

Modular Construction
Modular construction involves assembling a ship using 300-ton 'lego' like blocks, constructed to exacting standards. The block are constructed elsewhere complete with all the piping, electrical wiring and fitments that would go into the section of the ship. When the blocks are assembled, the piping and wiring must neatly come together end to end.

Both MDL and GRSE have no prior experience in modular ship building and the Navy had reservations about their ability to deliver the ships on time. However, the DAC appears to have brushed aside a Navy request to have two of the warships built at a foreign dockyard to enable the two Indian dockyards to imbibe the new technology and process.

The first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) INS Vikrant is also being constructed using modular technology at Kochi.

Security concerns are reported to have ruled out the use of a foreign shipyard since it would have entailed sharing the detailed design of the ship.

The project is expected to start by 2011, giving GRSE and MDL enough time to upgrade their infrastructure, with the first ship expected to be delivered within 3-4 years. All the seven frigates are expected to be delivered by 2021.

A fully equipped modular yard with a 250-ton Goliath crane being built at the Mazagaon docks will be ready by mid-2011.

Foreign Collaborator
MDL and GRSE plan to seek the help of a foreign collaborator to get them started with modular shipbuilding.

One of the companies likely to bid for the project is a joint venture (JV) between France’s DCNS, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), and Indian IT engineers Infotech Enterprises. The JV was setup to design ships for global clients and do back office work for DCNS, one of the world’s biggest warship builder.

DCNS already has a relationship with Mazagaon Docks Limited with whom it is jointly building Scorpene submarines under Project 75.

“We already have a relationship with DCNS; we are building the Scorpene together. They have the same infrastructure as we have, which means that the drawings they make can be easily translated into warships in our yard. But we will keep our options open by asking (Italian shipyard) Fincantieri to bid as well,” says Admiral HS Malhi, Chairman of MDL.

a super power is a power that can fight a war anywhere in the world, and we will not be able to do it for the next decades, nor is this capability in Indians interest. Right now, the US is the only super power on this planet
