Though Indians every year celebrate vijay diwas calling it as Pakistan's surrender on 17th Dec 1971.But indians forget the their own worst surrender at Kandhar in the same december month in 1999.
Kandhar was India's shameful surrender. At two levels. First, the governments crisis management team failed the nation: Why was hijacked aircraft allowed to take off from Amritsar? Once the aircraft crossed Indian airspace, its fate was sealed. And then occurred the second, larger failure: When pushed to the wall, Indias resolve crumbled.hijack the IC---814 of Indian Airlines plane from Kathmandu in Nepal to Kandhar in Afghanistan, on December 24 1999, brings back the bitter memory of an act of national shame committed by the BJP led NDA government over 13 years ago, with the country's then Foreign Minister, Jaswant Singh escorting the three hardcore terrorists lodged in the Tihar Jail Delhi and Kot Bhalwal in Jammu and handing them over on silver platter to the hijackers, in exchange for the release of the 179 passengers and eleven crew members kept as hostage by the hijackers, who had earlier killed one of the passengers.
This was an act of abject surrender which will go on haunting the BJP for all times to come and make the party subject of counter attack against its allegations of Congress led UPA government adopting a weak-kneed policy in meeting the challenge of Islamic terrorists and compromising the national security.
Apart from the exposure of utter failure of our intelligence as well as anti hijacking apparatus and want of nerves on the part of vital decision making agencies to take some daring prompt action at Sansi Airport in Amritsar where the hijacked plane had landed for refueling and thus aborting the nefarious design of the hijackers to fly the plane to a foreign land, for dictating terms to the Indian government, the want of large nerves on the part of the ruling dispensation then to not surrender before the hijackers even at the cost of loss of some valuable lives at their hand, also stands exposed.
The time has proved how the decision of then government of India to accept the dictates of the hijackers, under high pressure from the relatives of the hostages, to save their lives, has proved wrong and highly detrimental to the security of the country. It has cost the country heavily, Maulvi azhar Masood who after his release at Kandhar, moved to Pakistan and floated a new terrorist outfit, Jaish-e-Mohammad, has masterminded several terrorist attacks in J&K and other parts of India killing a much larger number of people, both civilians and security personnel, than those taken hostage and to save whose lives, he was set free. Azhar has also targeted vital installations in India. He along with other two terrorists released then were also reported to have their hand in plotting the terrorist attack on Indian Parliament in 2001.
This act of national shame committed by the BJP led NDA government will be a permanent black spot on the BJP and its claim of making no compromise where the country's security is concerned. The claimed iron man of BJP, L K Advani who is party's candidate for the slot of Prime Minister for the next Lok Sabha elections, with party having all the hope to form the NDA government again, is today under high threat from the same set of terrorist, with reports that ISI of Pakistan has assigned the underworld don, Dawood Abrahim the task of killing Advani and Narinder Modi. This threat procession to the Prime Minister in waiting has been conveyed personally by the National Security Advisor M K Narayanan to Advani, who has advised him to postpone his "Sankalap Yatra" scheduled to be launched, mid this month. While his proposed rally at Rampur in UP and at Jammu has been put off, it is to be seen weather the rest of the rallies are held as per schedule or too are deferred, taking refuge under discretion to be the best part of valour.
