'India's secret N-submarine project nearing completion'

INS Arihant to take long time to become operational
India's first nuclear-powered submarine launched on Sunday will take much longer than the projected two years to become operational, according to naval experts, who say the real big test now is to ensure that the on-board reactor attains criticality. Noting there is still lot left to do, the experts said scientists had a onerous task to see that the on-board nuclear reactor - the heart of the submarine - attains criticality without any hitches. Naval officials said INS Arihant (Destroyer of Enemies) codenamed Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) will undergo two years of sea trials in the Bay of Bengal after which they hope to see the submarine commissioned for full service. "It is little optimistic only for one reasons because it the first of its class. In the first of the class there are a large number of checks to be carried out. It could take much longer time frame than the two years being projected (for INS Arihant)," said Vice Admiral A K Singh(retd) former Captain of INS Chakra, the Charlie-class nuclear submarine. The second ATV or the third ATV will definitely come out much faster, Singh said. C Uday Bhaskar, Director, National Maritime Foundation, said, " I don't think we should over-interpret the capability of the Arihant at this stage because there are many more complex technological steps before the particular nuclear reactor on the Arihant acquires criticality." Bhaskar said hopefully three to five years down the road India would be a credible naval power because the country would then have the capability to fit the submarine with nuclear propulsion. Former Naval Chief Admiral (retd) Arun Prakash said a lot of work lies ahead for the country's scientists and engineers. "The big day will however come when the nuclear reactor attains criticality," he said. Admiral (retd) Arun Prakash said painstaking series of trials are necessary because even a minor malfunction can cause catastrophic results as the Kursk(Russian Submarine) accident showed. "They will also be long drawn-out and time-consuming because each defect that appears will be carefully analysed and rectified," he said. Experts also said the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) could take two to three years to indigenously develop cruise and ballistic missiles which can be fired from the submarine. Russia’s ambassador to India and Russian technologists associated with India’s nuclear submarine programme are present here. Their contribution is richly acknowledged.“We never had a nuclear submarine, and we needed design consultancy from them,” Vice Admiral Kannan says. The Arihant has about 40 per cent indigenous content. The next two submarines of the same class that are planned are likely to have more.

I think it will take more than 2-3 years to become fully operations. There will be lot of bugs in the software, system, etc., which need to rectified in the coming years.

Does the Indian sub... work?

So far everything India has made, Agnis, Nags, Nagins, Trishul, LCA, Arjun... all didn't work. Only time will tell how well does this work and if the Navy even orders more of these.

Who made this? DRDO?

hmmm,as a mod of def.pk you must enhance your knowledge at least bout the indian agni, pinaka and nag.....what you always overlook is that the arjun's problems has been sorted out and the lca is flying now with a mmr radar and set to get aesa radar and western engine within 2-3 yrs......somehow you enjoy living in the past.......the atv has been launched, the news and specs are spread all round the web,but still you couldn't help yourself from being sarcastic.......lolz.......anyways,you are a mod here, you can do anything you like!!!

The Indian army has limited its order for the Arjun, the LCA 's orders are being slashed all the time, lots of people claim your missiles don't work, Agni's Parabolic launch was hilarious. So one has to ask the question, how credible is this story?

I think its credible because Pakistan Navy spokesman Salman Ali thinks it as a threat ..;)

hmm, there can be lots of counter reasons for this, but then again let us keep that to the appropriate thread......back to topic, the atv is reality now,it was launched just a day back, still you have doubt bout it??......i am sure your doubt will be cleared effectively in the coming years.....regards

exactly, the atv hit right where it was reqd.....the pn and gop now are very much worried about india's new found grasp of second strike capability, which is evident from the remarks made by the pn spokesperson

India inducts first nuclear submarine with help from Russia
'Pakistan Times' Monitoring Desk

NEW DELHI (India): India on Sunday inducted its first nuclear submarine 'INS Arihant' with the cooperation of Russia declaring that 'it has no aggressive design'.

“We do not have any aggressive designs nor do we seek to threaten anyone. We seek an external environment in our region and beyond that is conducive to our peaceful development and protection of our value systems,” Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on the occasion.

In a symbolic launching ceremony, his wife Gursharan Kaur broke a coconut on the hull of the submarine at its secret naval base ‘Matsya’ dockyard in Vishakapatnam.

Defence Minister A K Antony, Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy were also present on the occasion. “I name it INS Arihant (destroyer of the enemy). All the best to the submarine,” she said.

“I would also like to express our appreciation to our Russian friends for their consistent and invaluable cooperation, which symbolises the close strategic partnership that we enjoy with Russia”, Manmohan Singh said.

He said, “nevertheless it is incumbent upon us to take all measures necessary to safeguard our country and to keep pace with technological advancements world. It has rightly been said that eternal vigilance is the right price for liberty”. “Today we join a select group of five nations who possess the capability to build a nuclear-powered submarine,” he added.

According to media reports, Code-named Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV), Arihant will carry ‘Sagarika’ (K-15) missile that has a range of 700 kms.

As India has declared “no first use” of nuclear weapons, the country’s weapons system must survive a first strike for retaliation. Therefore, Arihant’s primary weapon is stealth as it can lurk in ocean depths of half a kilometre or more and fire its missiles from under the sea, the reports said.

India has planned to build four more nuclear-powered submarine of this class. The submarine will undergo sea trials in the Bay of Bengal off Vishakapatnam, where the vessel was under construction for the last two decades.

The reports said the Rs 30,000-crore secret nuclear submarine project was started in 1980s though it was conceived by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1970s.

Indian Defence Minister A K Antony while referring to India’s non aggression and no-first-use nuclear policy, said that "the situation in the region had necessitated the need for a credible second-strike capability".

Jako, It's still going to take 2 years of testing before it becomes operational. They're still not done testing the nuclear reactor of a nuclear submarine.

In typical Indian fashion this 2 year timeline may still be elongated.

:guns: Best Answer.

Also, I think Pakistani Media (Specially that Zaid Hamid) and the governement is hiding truth from their innocent public. :pakistan:

dear asim, the operationilisation of a submarine is very much different from that of artillery divisions or missiles as you can see......the procedure followed is quite different........so unlike the ones i mentioned, you can term the atv a successfull project,as of now.....,yes you are right bout the fact that, weapon testing would only be done two years from now........and till now everything has gone just fine,so there is no need to speculate atv..........and btw,can you clear up what you were saying bout the nuclear reactor of the atv......thnx
