'India's secret N-submarine project nearing completion'

A Momentus Day for the Indian Military with Prime minsters wife officially launches the First of upto 5 nuke sub Arihant.

The 6500 tonne Sub carries upto 15 nuclear missles and cabn stay undr water for 3 months.

NDTV confirmed that the sub can be used in emergency even Today but the sea trials wil last 2 years.

By December this Year The Russian Nerpa Akulla 2 nuke attack submarine will also join the indian Navy.

This gives india a massive 2nd Strike capability.

Fantastic News regarding Arihant As India begins to join likes of USA USSR and UK/FRANCE as a indengiuos Naval nuke power.

Indian,s Navy is really going places withits enormous Indengious ship building programme.

Shocked Is all i can say.. It loks magnificent and is 6500 tonnes nearly twice thw size of the brand new scopene.

Each nuke sub will cost india $2.5 billion each

I think once inducted this sub will carry nuclear warheads all the time.
Perhaps this is new in indian security scenerio as i think our nuke missiles arent coupled with nukes and kept separately though in close proximity.

Sea Trails are same as a combat plane getting FOC. Final operational Clearance.

Commissioning is same as Initial operational Clearance for a fighter jet.

So ARIHANT AS achieved IOC but will take 2 YEARS TO GET TO foc.

Don’t mislead the already confused members who are taking a Foxtrot to be INS Arihant. It has a long way to go before becoming a fully functional naval asset. As per the reports coming in, even the weapons and sensors haven’t been integrated with the sub yet. There are several procedures to be followed before it can be inducted into the navy. These procedures include, testing & assessing the capabilities of the nuclear reactor in real sea conditions, ascertaining if the sub can dive to its full design depth, integrating and testing the sensors’ functionality under various depths, checking the noise levels and stealth systems and finally the actual weapons firing tests. All these procedures are going to take at least 2 yrs if not more i.e., if everything goes according to plan. Malfunctioning of onboard systems or design flaws may further delay the induction.

DRDO officials cautioned that while INS Arihant entering water from the dry-dock in the Ship-Building Centre of the Visakhatpatnam harbour on Sunday was an important step forward, making the boat operational would take time. “The submarine will now go for harbour acceptance trials (HATs). Then it will go for sea acceptance trials (SATs). Later it will go down to a certain depth and come up,” they said.

A nuclear-powered submarine was a highly complex platform and safety regulations had to be adhered to. “There are hundreds of systems on the boat. They have to work one after another. This is called setting-to-work. The HATs and SATs will last about a year-and-a-half. This is the most difficult period of activity and you have to do it perfectly. Then the K-15 missiles will be fitted into the boat.”

L&T plays crucial role in building India's first nuclear-powered submarine

Engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today said it has played a critical role in building India’s first nuclear powered submarine, which was launched today.


Based on the design provided by the Navy and Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDO), L&T’s submarine design centre carried out detailed engineering, using the latest 3D modeling and product data management software, said a press release.

"We feel very proud to have contributed significantly to realizing India’s dream of an indigenous nuclear submarine. Over the last four decades, L&T has played a crucial pioneering role in building India’s strategic sectors by successfully executing several technology-intensive and challenging projects," said A M Naik, chairman and managing director of L&T.

Building the first nuclear submarine was the latest milestone in L&T's association with the Indian Navy and the DRDO. L&T was looking forward to building more submarines and warships, he said.

In May, the company had entered into an agreement to float a joint venture (JV) with the largest defence equipment maker in Europe, EADS Defence and Security, to tap the Rs 50,000 crore Indian defence market. The JV is to design, develop and manufacture electronic warfare equipment, radars, military avionics and mobile systems for military requirements. L&T was planning to invest about Rs 2,000 crore over the next three years on defence-related business, Naik had said.

In addition to being the country’s first nuclear-powered indigenous submarine, the new vessel is also the largest and heaviest vessel ever built in India. L&T made the single largest contribution in the construction of this vessel, right from the stage of plate cutting to launch, said the release.

L&T also has co-operation agreements with three major nuclear reactor makers. These are Atomstroyexport (ASE), part of Rosatom of Russia, Toshiba Westinghouse of the US and Atomic Energy of Canada (AEC). The company is also in talks with General Electric Hitachi of the US and Areva of France.
