A naval vessel with a mystery name — VC 11184 — has been built at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) at a cost of ?725 crore under a classified project which began four years ago.

Like hush-hush construction of nuclear submarines, complete secrecy is being maintained by Navy and HSL on the missile-range instrumentation ship, which will be India's most advanced and largest ocean surveillance vessel that can track ballistic missiles.

Reliable sources in HSL and Navy told TOI the project is in trial phase and the warship will be handed over to Navy in a few months. The vessel would have a special team on board from the technical intelligence bureau (National Technical Research Organisation), which directly reports to National Security Advisor's office.

A highly-placed source in HSL said, "We bagged the prestigious project three years ago and began construction at our ship-building yard. The ship is almost ready and once the trials get over, it will be officially handed to the Navy in 2018. Secrecy has been maintained on the project which is being monitored by PMO ."

As per information from defence websites, the vessel, known only by its mysterious yard designation at Visakhapatnam, VC 11184, will be deployed for supporting India's strategic weapons programme.

After HSL bagged project in 2013, ship was to be delivered by August 2015, but it was stuck in logistical delays . The warship is 175m in length with a displacement of 10,000 tonnes.

It's a french ship used for 'illustration purpose'. How can it be a secret if even pakdef knows about it. You need to understand the Indian definition of 'secret'.

Its going to be on the same line & length.
Hence cant be hidden.
Common sense.

The ship wasn't meant to be a secret but the project was carried in secrecy until the construction of the ship is completed. It is easier to spy on the sub-systems and other communication equipment during construction phase using the yard employees rather than when it is fully built and commissioned. This ship isn't meant to be stealth but is more about the surveillance systems equipped in it

Not all that you see exists and not all that exist can you see, no matter how large they are in size. We are equally glad you owned the truth.

It's very much for the purpose of tracking missiles over large area, Western coastal region would be monitored pretty well now....great news Vande matram

The Indian Navy is expected to receive the missile-range instrumentation ship, India's most advanced and largest ocean surveillance vessel that can track ballistic missiles, in 2018.

A naval vessel known only by its mysterious yard designation at Visakhapatnam, VC 11184 -- is being built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) at a cost of INR 725 crore (US$111m) under a classified project which began four years ago.

According to Times of India, the project is in trial phase and the warship will be handed over to Navy in a few months.

A highly-placed source in HSL was quoted as saying: "We bagged the prestigious project three years ago and began construction at our ship-building yard. The ship is almost ready and once the trials get over, it will be officially handed to the Navy in 2018. Secrecy has been maintained on the project which is being monitored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Office".

According to the report, the vessel will be deployed for supporting India's strategic weapons programme. The vessel would have a special team on board from the technical intelligence bureau (National Technical Research Organisation), which directly reports to National Security Advisor's office.

VC 11184 is nearly 175 metres in length and will have Displacement of 10,000 tonnes and has a similar dimension in comparison to INS Jalashwa amphibious transport dock operated by Indian Navy.
