India's Astra BVRAAM Flight Firing This Year

Aero India 2013 afforded the first view of a full-scale model of India's Astra BVRAAM. In an interview to a newspaper recently, DRDO chief V.K. Saraswat said 2013 was 'Astra Year' for the agency as the missile would finally see flight trials. The missile has already been tested from a ground launcher a few times and had captive trials on a Su-30MKI. The weapon is intended to be integrated on the LCA Tejas, Su-30MKI, upgraded Mirage 2000 and Jaguar.

I guess they mean that these trials were made from them (DRDO), without support of Sukhoi and fully integrating it into the fighter and it's systems.

Captive carry trails are conducted to test the effect the missile will have on the flight performance of the aircraft.
These tests are also designed to test the effect of wind, vibration and extreme temperatures on the missile and integration with the aircrafts on-board computers. In some captive 'carry' tests the aircraft will simulate the missile and fly the same mission profile as the missile.

Yes, good job indeed. The IAF was right to insist on a smokeless or reduced smoke missile.
Smokeless missiles are much harder to defeat since they much harder to visually acquire.

I bet DRDO earned the knowledge of smokeless propulsion from NAG ATGMs. This is how hardwork pays us!

Possibly I don't know much about NAG ATGM. It is too early to celebrate, remains to be seen if the fuel is stable under varying conditions and is able propel the missile adequately and reliably in the air. A successful ground test does not guarantee desired results in the air especially at altitudes where the air is much colder .
