India on Friday signed Memorandum of Obligations — a key document — kick starting the process of its accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a powerful security grouping increasingly seen as a counterweight to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The document was signed by the Secretary (East) Ministry of External Affairs Sujata Mehta at the SCO summit which was attended by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India will have to sign around 30 other documents in 2016 to complete the process for membership. Pakistan is also being inducted into SCO as a full member.

SCO's membership is expected to help India have a greater say in issues relating to security and defence besides combating terrorism.

India, one of the largest energy consuming countries in the world, is expected to get greater access to major gas and oil exploration projects in Central Asia once it becomes a member of the SCO. Many of the SCO countries have huge reserves of oil and natural gas.

The SCO had set ball rolling to make India a member of the bloc during its summit in Ufa in July 2015 when administrative hurdles were cleared to grant membership to India, Pakistan and Iran.

SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by Presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India, Iran and Pakistan were admitted as observers at the 2005 Astana Summit.

The Tashkent SCO Summit in June 2010 had lifted the moratorium on new membership, paving the way for expansion of the grouping.

India feels as SCO member, it will be able to play a major role in addressing the threat ofterrorism in the region.

India is also keen on deepening its security-related cooperation with the SCO and its Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS) which specifically deals with issues relating to security and defence.

India has been an observer at the SCO since 2005 and has generally participated in ministerial-level meetings of the grouping which focus mainly on security and economic cooperation in the Eurasian region.

Russia has been favouring permanent SCO membership for India while China pushed for induction of Pakistan.

Congress was successful in getting India into SCO and full credit to the Sonia & MMS. What's interesting is that India becoming a member of SCO in spite of BJP being in power now.

Congress was able to get NSG waiver for India while BJP miserably failed in getting India into NSG. The buck stops at PM desk. In an ideal world, PM should have resigned for this failure but Indian PM neither feels shame nor accountable. At the very least FS should have been sacked for this colossal failure.

Russia was successful in pushing India's case in SCO, an organization that China created and controls while US failed to push India's case in NSG which US itself created and controls.

What an irony...

Amazing. India agreed to sign the CISMOA/LSA and grant American troops access to Indian military bases, in exchange for the NSG seat. Also replacing Russia as their top defence partner with America, angering Russia.

Now they turned around and joined the SCO, pissing off America/NATO. :cheesy:

No wonder America didn't live up to their promise to get India the NSG seat. Everyone knows how the US/NATO feels about the SCO, India has basically aligned themselves against the allies they just picked up a few months ago.

no one is pissed anywhere. Except china of course. And SCO will eventually turn out to be dud like AIIB. Congrats, when it comes to make us burn our money on your kooky schemes you're excellent.

When India had applied for membership, the China made same noises as NSG regarding more members joining SCO.

But with India's membership done, I guess Russians had reminded the Chinese that the organization is "Shanghai" in name only. ;)

Seems like Chinese are destined to be "junior partners" for the Russians. :D

It seems that in return for China vetoing India at the NSG, India still wants to be under China's thumb in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and declare themselves as opponents of US/NATO (even after signing their sovereignty away to American military bases). :P

Man I'm seriously loving Indian diplomacy right now. :enjoy: It's just win after win!

There is no balancing act here.

The independent foreign policy and balancing act existed until 2 years ago when India was able to get NSG waiver on one hand while at the same time was able to convince Russia to push India's case into SCO.

The independent foreign policy died the day the incumbent government took office. For the last two years, India has clearly moved towards the West without any doubt.

Why are you copy pasting same thing in every thread? Why are you so insecure?
We are not going sign CISMOA/LSA or atleast in its full form. India threatened US regarding Paris climate agreement not china. China invited India as full member back in 2012, nothing to do with NSG.

The US today said that there is "a path forward" for India to become a full member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group by the end of the year, hours after the group's plenary meeting ended in Seoul

Isn't it ironic that China was able to veto India's case in NSG, an organization that US created and controls while could not veto India's case in SCO, an Organization that China itself created and controls.
