Indian vegetarian allowed to break curfew to buy food for cat

A man in the Indian state of Kerala has had a decision that prevented him travelling to buy food for his pet cats overturned by the courts.

India is currently under a strict lockdown because of coronavirus and the man's initial request to travel to buy the biscuits was rejected.

He appeared before Kerala High Court via video conferencing and said that, as a vegetarian, he did not cook non-vegetarian cat food in his house - and that one bag of the biscuits would feed his cats until the end of the lockdown.

The High Court granted the man permission to travel, suggesting failure to do so would break animal cruelty laws.

It ended its statement by adding "we are also certain that our directions will help avert a 'CATastrophe' in the petitioner’s home".

On the face of it, this "and in other news" feel good piece has a happy ending as the cat will get fed. However, why should a person who is strict vegetarian not simply be forced to prepare a meat meal at home for the cat in view of the prevailing emergency circumstances?

If Muslims can pray at home to avoid breaking lockdown, Hindus and other strict vegetarians can cook meat at home for their cats for the same overarching reason...not so according to the Indian judicial system.

Muslims are allowed to pray at home as per their religion. Meat is a very big deal for Hindus who are vegetarians.

In Delhi, we are going out to buy groceries and cat /pet food. It is important to go alone, and not form groups, though.

Hang on. I realise there are other solutions, e.g. postal delivery of cat food. That is not the debate here. The point is a court of law didn't suggest some alternative, nor did they say get the cat food at the same time as other items.

The point is the court ruled that he could go out for cat food as to stay in and make meat would compromise his religious belief. The court gave an exception to lockdown on the basis of his Hindu or Jain faith.
