NEW DELHI: Indian and Bangladeshi troops will commence a series of exercises, primarily with the focus on counter terrorism and counter insurgency in the semi-mountainous and jungle terrain of Tangail from Saturday.
The Indian Army contingent, a company group strength of the Mahar Regiment, numbering about 120 troops, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by an Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster on Friday to participate in the exercise.
"The Indian contingent is being led by Col P S Sandhi. This is the sixth edition of Ex Sampriti and will be conducted at Bangabandhu Senanibas in Tangail from Saturday till November 18," said Wg Cdr S S Birdi, CPRO, Ministry of Defence, Kolkata.
Sampriti 2016 will commence with the familiarization phase in various tactical drills and procedures that is essential for smooth and co-ordinated operations. Subsequently, soldiers of both countries will undertake execution of joint tactical operations like cordon and search, road opening, raid and house clearance. The Sampriti series of exercises is one of the major bilateral defence co-operation initiatives between the two countries. Sampriti 2015 was held at Binnaguri in north Bengal.
"Security forces in India and Bangladesh face the same challenges and that is of organized terror. The Indian Army has been involved in counter-insurgency and counter-terror operations across a variety of terrain for decades now.
Security agencies in Bangladesh have also been facing similar threats over the last few years. In some cases, the same outfits operate in India and Bangladesh. Such exercises are crucial for a more co-ordinated effort in countering threats," a senior officer said.
