Kashmiris mark Indias Republic Day with strikes
ISLAMABAD/SRINAGAR: A complete strike was observed in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) on the Indian Republic Day, with businesses, offices, banks and courts remaining closed, APP reported on Monday.
The strike call was given by All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, senior Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani and the High Court Bar Association of IHK, KMS reported.
According to the Associated Press, the Republic Day celebrations passed peacefully in IHK amid intense security. There were no disruptions to the morning celebrations, as streets were largely deserted. Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and across the world have been observing January 26 as a black day for the last 61 years to convey to the international community that they want freedom from Indias rule. agencies
