A peaceful Republic Day in Kashmir

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR, JAN.26. For the first time in 15 years the Republic Day celebrations went off peacefully in Kashmir Valley. Though the participation of people was low as a strike disrupted normal life, not a single violent incident was reported due to tight security.

At the Bakhshi Stadium here, the Finance Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, unfurled the tricolour and took the salute at the march past. Criticising separatist leaders, he said they were sabotaging the democratic process in the State.

Without naming the Hurriyat leaders, Mr. Baig said: "Those who live in security are harassing and intimidating people and asking them not to be part of the democratic process." Criticising their stand on elections, he said the local bodies' elections were not being held for resolving the Kashmir issue but for the uplift of the people.

Appealing to the people of Srinagar city to come out in large numbers and participate in the civic polls, he said that this was a historic opportunity after more than two decades to elect their representatives for solving local problems.

Mr. Baig said the Government led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has adopted a policy, which was in consonance with the democratic norms and aimed at providing relief on the social, economic and political fronts. This policy, which was well-received at the national level, came to be known as "healing touch policy."

New era

Despite some clouds hovering over the Indo-Pakistan political scenario, the time was not far off when both the countries will move closer, he asserted adding that a new era of friendship and stability will dawn in the subcontinent and the people of Jammu & Kashmir benefiting the most.

A three-tier security blanket was thrown around the Bakshi Stadium, in view of the recent fidayeen attacks by the militants, particularly in the vicinity of the stadium, said the Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir zone, Javaid Mukhdoomi.

AJK PM urges India to resolve Kashmir issue

Tuesday, January 27, 2009
ISLAMABAD: The AJK Prime Minister, Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob, urged the Indian leadership to resolve the issue of Kashmir in accordance with the aspiration of the people of Kashmir.

Talking in a TV programme on Monday, Sardar Yaqoob called upon India to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with the UN resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people so that lasting peace in the region could be made possible.

He said the Kashmiris across the world observe Indian Republic Day as Black Day every year due to continuous Indian denial of giving Kashmiri people their birth right, right to self-determination as it was promised by India 61 years ago. He said India failed to suppress the wishes of the Kashmiri people by force. About 90,000 Kashmiri men, women and children have been martyred by Indian armed forces in the worst human rights violations of the history, he added.

Good job for starting this thread.

Behind the big orange white green parade, and the galloping horses, the feathered hats, and the shiny slick black shoes, and Indian national rhetoric on this day...There is a grim and ugly reality that has lingered and continues to haunt us for over 60 years...

And we should shed light on this, and this is a great day to do exactly that.

ROFL!

Its one of probably THREE DAYS in the entire year in India which is a MANDATORY HOLIDAY!

Opening any shop or any institute on 26th Jan has an immediate fine which is heavy! Its mandatory to close all shops, businesses on 26th Jan all over India!

This is called bull-$hit reporting, created specifically for the average Pakistani to think that Kashmir was protesting heavily!

. .
i also viewed it as a black day with many others
thanks for posting this up

.
If they REALLY wanted to protest they should have made every shop/business/institute/organization in Kashmir open up and conduct business as usual!!
