Commando operation ruled out to free Indians from ship

NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said the safety of seven Indian sailors on cargo ship MV Asphalt Venture—who were not released despite ransom having been paid—was top priority, but an offensive to rescue all 54 Indians held on six different ships in the lawless African nation was being considered “unfeasible”.
The hostage crisis around Asphalt Venture has left the government surprised after pirates held seven out of 15 Indian sailors back despite the owner of the ship paying the ransom.
Defence minister A K Antony said a naval frigate INS Talwar was being moved to the area and help was also being sought from friendly navies in the region to protect the Asphalt Venture.
A top-level meeting was held on Sunday where the hostage crisis was discussed and it was decided that before embarking on any other anti-piracy plan, the lives of the seven Indian crew on the Asphalt Venture, and the eight who were released, should be saved at any cost.
Pirates are angry with India for launching massive operations in the Arabian Sea and beyond and recently capturing close to 100 of them and foiling 31 hijacking attempts. They want the release of pirates held in Indian prisons in exchange for the Indians held hostage.
As pressure is increasing on the government to launch a military offensive, as has been done by some of the other navies to secure their citizens from custody of pirates, naval sources said that it faced a different scenario.
The foremost concern in launching such an offensive is collateral damage, said sources. A military intervention would risk lives of hostages who are not Indians alone. With other nationalities involved, the government will have to take other countries into confidence.

Yeah sit with other countries to discuss and lose precious time and surprise factor. Maybe after all the drama, we can see indians and somalies sitting side by side negotiating. India needs to learn from Moscow theater incident.

The coup d'état failed after Indian forces were invited by the Maldivian government to intervene.

The operation started on the night of November 3, 1988, when Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft of the Indian Air Force airlifted a battalion of the Parachute Regiment from Agra Air Force Station and flew them non-stop over 2,000 kilometres (1,240 mi) to air-drop them over the Male International Airport on Hulhule Island. The Indian Army paratroopers arrived on Hulhule less than 12 hours after the appeal from President Gayoom.

The Indian paratroopers immediately secured the airfield and restored control of the capital to President Gayoom's government within hours. Some of the mercenaries fled toward Sri Lanka in a hijacked freighter. Those unable to reach the ship in time were quickly rounded up and handed over to the Maldives government. Nineteen people reportedly died in the fighting, most of them mercenaries. The dead included two hostages killed by the mercenaries. Indian Navy frigates, INS Godavari and INS Betwa intercepted the freighter off the Sri Lankan coast, and captured the mercenaries. Swift operation by the military and precise intelligence information successfully quelled the attempted coup d'état in the island nation.

these pirates operate from a specific part of Somalia.....and they dont even have any kind links with the somalian govt. neither they are controlled by the Govt. thus the target here is known. India is the most affected country by these pirates and also they have now declared a war specifically on India..so it makes all the sense to just go for a full scale carpet bombing of that specific area after getting our sailors free.

actually they hit hard by India's anti-piracy operations. Indian navy damaged them a lot.

Some people are worried that any commando operation will lead to the further capturing and death of Indian sailors but fact is that if we don't act now the Somalis will look forward to capture Indians because they too will realize that we have a sorry govt.

So now they can capture sailors, get ransom and still don't free the sailors, so no commando operations are not a good choice.
