The Indian Navy's (IN's) Directorate of Ship Production has issued a request for information (RfI) relating to six Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) under the 'Buy (Indian)/Buy and Make (Indian)' category of the Defence Procurement Policy (DPP) 2013.

The RfI, issued in early February, aims to "finalise the specifications of the NGMVs to meet the Indian Navy's requirements," after which requests for proposal (RfPs) will be issued to selected vendors.

The RfI stipulates that the IN only welcomes responses from vendors that meet certain "minimum qualifying criteria" including the key stipulation that it should be a shipyard that has built "vessel(s) of similar specifications"

Missile Vessels or Missile Boats are not Frigates - They are way smaller than Frigates - like the Indian Navy's Vidyut-class missile boat - But yes they are no less destructive - Indian Navy's Vidyut-class missile boat formed the illustrious 25th "Killer" Missile Boat Squadron, which sunk 2 destroyers, a minesweeper and various other vessels of the Pakistan Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. :D

Missile boats are usually Fast Attack Craft or FAC. Not sure if IN will go for the Missile Boats as FAC or have another class of ships for the same.

Dosent Barak 1 fulfil put PDMS and VSHORAD requirement?

If they can get Barak 1 in RAM config instead of VLS (lack of space) onboard this corvette size ship it should do the job

Looks like a surface warfare equivalent of Kamorta class corvettes. @Abingdonboy @sancho @janon
Notably absent is the requiement for a hangar and a helicopter. IMHO, you are looking at a replacement for the Khukri (early 1990s)/Kora (early 2000) classes. Kamorta has substantially greater manning levels than mentioned above. Or else Veer/Abhay replacement.

SSM > antiship missile
PDMS > self defence SAM e.g. previously Sea Sparrow, currently RAM or Barak1
Medium range gun > 76mm cannon
CIWS > AK630
VSHORADS > manpads, possibly (remote control) pedestal mounted

Veer and Khukri and Kora classes pretty much have this weapons fit, but for the PDMS (iirc the latter were initially to get Barak?)

If that's the final number then it's Khukri/Kora replacements.

The navy's RFI, leaves out specifics of displacement, though it appears that it could be looking for 2,000-2,500 ton vessel class -- smaller than the brand new Kamorta-class ASW corvettes that began inductions last year, but significantly larger than the Indian-built Kora and Khukri class of surface warfare corvettes.

Right. It will be interesting to see what Anti-ship missile It will carry though. Would love if it will be Brahmos as almost all new warships of Indian navy are getting Brahmos and even old ones who are going to overhaul or mid life refit but not sure if this class of ships will be qualified for that.
