Indian Navy docks three ships in Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI: The Indian navy has docked three ships in Abu Dhabi to show case its capacity to train Indian and foreign naval personnel of friendly countries.
The despatch of the three training ships — Tir, Krishna and Veera — is meant to convey India’s readiness to engage in naval diplomacy to shore up its ties with the countries of the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said diplomatic sources.
From Abu Dhabi, the ships will travel to neighbouring Oman and the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.
The presence of the ships underscore India’s commitment to remain engaged with the Gulf as an independent player, with full awareness of its strategic autonomy, said Ambassador to UAE, Talmiz Ahmad.
The visit follows the recent docking in Abu Dhabi of the navy’s state-of-the art survey ship, which can carry out hydrographic surveys overseas in a cost-effective manner.
Commanding Officer of Tir, Rajiv Mehta said at a press conference on board the ship on Tuesday the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala was equipped and ready to train foreign naval personnel from countries such as the UAE.
The Indian side will meet UAE naval personnel to explore multilevel tie ups that could help improve the security of shipping along vital sea lanes that connect the oil rich Gulf with India.
