I've seen a sikh MLA in Odisa assembly speak Odia pretty fluently and so are couple of marwadi members without any hesitation,ofcourse they born and brought up in Odisa.

Odisa Chief minister Naveen Patnaik takes oath in English.
He doesn't know odia at all.
Still then he is the CM for last 3 times.

My dad is from Kanpur, UP.

I grew up in Bihar (it became Jharkhand after I left ..... so for me, I would always say Bihar), growing up in Jamshedpur.

I have been living in Poona since 1989.

I have been a certified domicile of Maharashtra since 1999.

I speak Hindi (my National language), English, and Gujarati (my mother tongue).

I do not speak Marathi. I can understand it pretty well by now, but I do not speak it.

I do not see any reason or pressing compulsion to learn to speak it either.

My wife, born and brought up in Poona, speaks fluent Marathi.

My kids, all 3 of them, born here and growing up here, speak Marathi as well.

I have come across some apparently educated but closet MNS types as well .... "Ohhhhhh ...... you don't know Marathi?"

Yes I don't.

If in a meeting in office, people start breaking into Marathi, even though I understand every word they say, I make it a point to tell them to please speak in English.

This is the Union of India. This is not a federation of autonomous states.

I am an Indian, only an Indian. Not Bihari. Not a bhaiyya from UP. Not a Marathi manoos.

I will work and make my livelihood for me and my family where i want to.

The constitution of India was accepted by different peoples with an implicit guarantee in mind, the guarantee that they will be allowed to live the way they were. Asking for more 'unity' just because YOU think that one language will cause better unity is just being simplistic. You are talking about altering cultures here, people will not want to forget what they received from their forefathers. You are manipulating the spirit of constitution when you say that I will go to some state and after getting elected to some body there by claiming to be a representative of people there, I will practice my culture in public and with public there. Not at least when you are representing people there.

Nobody claims to be a representative of the people...they get elected.The people of Maharashtra made the choice of electing this guy...knowing that he is a migrant from Lucknow and a hindi speaker.
So I am guessing that a vast majority of the marathis want better governance than a case for the marathi(language) cause....
It is their choice to have their elected reps speaking, legislating...farting in marathi....

I am against an elective man getting beat-up for taking his oath in hindi, the national language of India.They could have protested...beating up a man of his stature shows the true colors of your maratha saviors.

I do not agree that Maratha nationalism is counter productive, nor was Tamil nationalism. The consolidation that Tamil nationalism caused is shown by the stability we see now here. Tamils needed to know that they are getting the respect they deserved. They do not want one soul to ask them to learn hindi to be an Indian. Their learning hindi is just a matter of convenience. And when the fears are finally gone we see the results.

Tamils have fought over statues,film stars and sheer bloated ego with the karnatkans...I don't support the karnatkans..and they are equally at fault...when you have an over-inflated cultural pride in you...you tend to pick up fights...
infact...who can forget the formation of Tamil separatists when rajiv gandhi ordered the IPKF into SL...!
you see the shiny side of regionalism ruby...it is counter-productive.

Like wise the maratha nationalism will settle down slowly. I agree that there have been excesses. But the support for the movement shows there is a real problem.
If you are ignoring these and demanding that all people be Indians and let their fellow Indians overwhelm their place and culture just because the constitution literally provides for that then you are asking too much, taking away the security that the constitution tries to give to its people.

i believe that the right of abu azmi to take his oath in his language is as valid as the MNS's demand for marathi to be the official state language...this raj thackrey has used his goons to force marathi on others...this I can confidently classify as being undemocratic.

I have told many MNS/Sena workers the same thing. When they and their families go for shopping they start speaking in Hindi.

They sometimes find it surprising when i (Telugu) and my friends (Gujarati, Tamils, Biharis, etc.) speak only in Marathi with each other. And they speak in Hindi with others...

first of all ,in every indian state ,official work is done two languages ,one is the regional lang and the other one is english.

Naveen Patnaik spent most part of life in delhi and his mother was a punjabi woman.

Since he came to orissa after the death of his father Biju Patniak ,he has been trying learn oriya...and in the initial yrs ,his odia speech used to evoked amusement for odia listeners , and has made much progress with odia skills over ther years.

He never ever resorted to hindi ,calling it out national lang(wrongfully) or punjabi, his mother tongue and a legal lang of india.
