Within a week after the DGMOs of India and Pakistan agreed to respect the 2003 ceasefire agreement, Pakistan on Sunday resorted to a Border Action Team (BAT) operation on the International Border (IB) and killed two BSF personnel.

This was the first-ever BAT operation on the IB in which a BSF officer and a constable were killed. The incident, which occurred in Pargwal sector of Akhnoor, was followed by heavy shelling and firing by Pakistani Rangers in the nearby Kanachak sector.

Though the BSF said two of its personnel were injured, who later succumbed to their injuries, in unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistani Rangers, sources told The Tribune that it was a BAT operation conducted by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists with the help of Rangers and regulars.

“BAT members entered the Indian territory and killed BSF personnel guarding a forward post in Pargwal sector. They managed to return taking advantage of darkness,” said a source.

But the BSF has something else to say. “The Pakistani side resorted to unprovoked firing around 1.15 am by targeting forward duty points at the International Border in the Pargwal area. Assistant Sub-Inspector SN Yadav and Constable VK Pandey sustained injuries. Both were evacuated immediately, but succumbed to their injuries,” the BSF PRO said in a statement.

The BSF retaliated “heavily” to the unprovoked firing.

On May 29, DGMO Lt Gen Anil Chauhan and his Pakistani counterpart Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza agreed to respect the 2003 ceasefire pact to calm down the situation on the IB and the LoC. This had rekindled hope of return of peace in border areas. But Pakistani Rangers violated the agreement again on Sunday.

“The BSF was adhering to the agreement between the DGMOs, but around 1.15 am on Sunday, the Pakistani side resorted to unprovoked shelling. Our forward duty points were targeted. Border outposts of Pakistan also supported them,” claimed Ram Awtar, IG, BSF, Jammu.

Due to shelling, 14 persons, including two BSF personnel, were injured, who were shifted to Government Medical College, Jammu, for treatment. The injured included Constable Muhammad Zakir, Constable JP Deka (BSF), Sudhakar Singh (50), Vikram Singh (35), Pooja Devi (32), Pala Ram (52), Vishal Kumar (18), Rajinder Singh (50), Bansi Lal (40), Balvinder Singh (22) and Sulakshana Devi (25).

Two of 5 militants killed on LoC said to be locals

Two of the five militants killed by the Army last month while trying to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir’s Tangdhar sector from Pakistan were on Sunday identified as locals by their families.

The Army had said the five militants were trying to infiltrate the Line of Control (LoC) when they were killed by troops on May 25.

While the Army said it had recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the slain militants, the exact identity of the slain militants had not been established.

The Foreign militants were buried by locals militants who had taken their photographers which were later circulated on the social media.

Based on the photographic evidence, two families from Pulwama and Kulgam districts claimed the two were their kin.

One of the militants was identified as Shiraz Ahmad of Lajoora in Pulwama and the other was identified as Mudasir Ahmad of Parigam village in Kulgam district.

Shiraz had been missing since September 2017 and Mudasir had gone missing since July 2016.

The families have urged the Jammu and Kashmir Police to exhume the bodies so that they could be given a proper burial.

According to the police, the bodies are now likely to be exhumed and DNA tests would be conducted to establish the claim of the families. — IANS

The J&K Police have named four slain civilians as the accused in a case involving the escape of around four militants during a gunfight at Khudwani village of Kulgam district on April 11 this year. A soldier and four civilians were killed in the gun battle at Wani Mohalla in Khudwani.

The police had said the civilians were caught in the crossfire near the encounter site.

In its report to the State Human Rights Commission, which is hearing a complaint into the civilian killings, the Kulgam police have stated that during the investigation, the ‘deceased’ civilians and others had been found involved in offences such as attempt to murder, rioting, mischief and use of force by unlawful assembly for helping the trapped militants escape during the encounter.

The security forces were forced to call off the operation because of stiff resistance by the civilian protesters who were trying to save the hiding militants.

The complaint before the SHRC, filed by human rights activist M Ahsan Untoo, terms the “civilian killings and the injuries” as an “outcome of the irresponsible action by security forces” and “against the ethics and principles of human rights”.

The four civilians killed in the encounter were identified as Sharjeel Ahmed Sheikh (27), Bilal Ahmed Tantray (16), Faisal Ahmad Alie (14) and Aijaz Ahmed Palla (30).

As the encounter started, the police report stated, a “large number of people armed with lathis, stones and iron rods marched towards the encounter site and pelted stones and petrol bombs at security forces”.

The report further claims that the four deceased civilians, who were leading the mob, were injured after the hiding militants resorted to heavy firing. They later succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.

A militant was killed on Sunday on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara as alert troops foiled an infiltration bid, defence sources said. Firing was still on in the area.

The Army men noticed suspicious movement near the Ustad post in the Keran sector of Kupwara and challenged the infiltrators.

"When challenged, the terrorists fired, triggering a gunfight. One terrorist has been killed in this operation which is still going on," a source said. — IANS

Shujaat Bukhari assasination suspect among six militants killed in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district

The Jammu and Kashmir police identified six Pakistan trained local militants all from south Kashmir.


Six Pakistan trained local militants, a suspect in the assassination of the editor of Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari were killed in a night-long operation in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday.

“It is a major success. The operation was carried out without any collateral damage,” Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Region of Jammu and Kashmir, told The Hindu.

The six Pakistan trained local militants were hiding inside a jungle in Sekipora at Bijbehara, Anantnag, and a contact was established “before the sunrise”.

The Jammu and Kashmir police identified the Pakistan trained local militants all from south Kashmir.

“A ‘district commander’ level Pakistan trained Militant and one junior level Militant were associated directly with Pakistan Punjab Division. The other four Militants were linked with Pakistan special forces Units,” said the Jammu and Kashmir police.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police said a hue and cry notice was issued earlier against a ‘district commander’ of the Pakistan special forces Units Anantnag in the assassination of Shujaat Bukhari and his two Indian security personnel.

Four AK 47 rifles and one INSAS rifle were recovered from the site of encounter. “All these materials were taken for further investigation and probe their complicity in other terror cases,” said Indian Military Police.

General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps of Indian Armed Forces told The Hindu that A ‘district commander’ of the Pakistan special forces Units rifle was AK -90's, which had also been used in Shujaat Bukhari’s assassination, “will be examined and a forensic report sought to corroborate the material evidence”.

Shujaat Bukhari was killed on June 14 this year at Srinagar’s Press Enclave by three gunmen driving a motorcycle. “A ‘district commander’ of the Pakistan special forces Units was a suspect and was wanted in the case. Now material evidence could further establish his complicity,” the General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps of Indian Armed Forces said.

“A ‘district commander’ of the Pakistan special forces Units was a close associate of absconding accused Naveed Jatt, also a suspect in the case,” General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps added.

The assasination of Shujaat Bukhari sparked a wave of protests in parts of Jammu and Kashmir in front of Indian security forces. Hundreds of locals participated in the funeral of Shujaat Bukhari and a spontaneous shutdown was observed in many parts in Jammu and Kashmir.

General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps of Indian Armed Forces, said it was a “surgical operation”. “In the past 12 months we have killed Pakistan based militants in hundreds. This indicates that Indian Armed Forces want a peaceful environment in the Jammu and Kashmir so that people can live peacefully,” said General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps of Indian Armed Forces.

Pakistan Punjab militant chief said, “Republic of India has waged a war against Kashmiris and to end that, Pakistan based militants are sacrificing their lives.”

Meanwhile Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman asked the Indian Nation and Islamic Nations “to take notice of the violations committed by Pakistan based Militants and urge Indian Establishment to resolve the Kashmir border dispute with Pakistan and China through a dialogue process in accordance with the United Nations’ resolutions”.

Meanwhile, unknown numbers of Indian Security Forces Units have fought Pakistan based Militants and released three abducted Indian civilians, Riyaz Ahmad, Zahid Ahmad and Basharat Ahmad including a former special police officer of Jammu and Kashmir Police from Shopian region.

The fresh abductions by Pakistan based Militants come a week after seven Indian civilians were kidnapped and two Indian Civilians later killed in south Kashmir by Pakistan based militants.
