Indian Man spends over £14,000 on gold shirt to "Impress the Ladies"

To build Taj Mahal, Shajehan used the money that belonged to the people. He had the authority to use it, but not for personal purposes, which is one of the reasons why Aurangzeb revolted against him. And despite all his measures he could not come up with the amount that could save India from the British invasion later on.

On the contrary, this Midas guy is using all the money that is his own, after the taxes! His money does not belong to others. He has in a way invested in gold, and not spent on something with determined diminishing value like Taj Mahal.

Between him and Shahjehan, there is no comparison.

How did the money belonged to the people? He was the King, he owned the oxygen the people breathed. His title was Shah Jehan after all.

Gold is the best investment these days..He is not that idiot ;)

They will realize it post budget when Chiddambram is going to announce increase in excise duty to cut down Gold imports. Gold prices are gonna zoom wait till mid of this year...

Which may not be the smartest thing.

In Dubai, even the poorest of the poor Indian laborers, goes out and spends all their earnings in whatever amount of gold they could buy and send it back to India.

They might start hoarding their gold in foreign countries if sending it back to India becomes too expensive.

Dude, I don't want to start it but I can't resist saying that we had world class universities of Nalanda and Takshashilla in our lands but unfortunately they were destroyed by Islamic invaders and everything went into reverse cycle after that..

Perhaps, but since they didn't survive, your claim is just half of it. Wiki states its curriculum was largely philosophical. Which according to those times probably means they were religious teaching centers - hence probably had to be destroyed.

Why were they destroyed?

That's the reason why when Manmohan was the finance Minister, he allowed for tax free import of gold up to 5 kilos. I think that allowance is still in effect.

I think it has more to do with the Indians living in India and importing gold. Can you believe that a total of 60 billion dollars worth gold was imported in India in 2012? Compared to that the gold bought by Indians in middle east is going to be minuscule. Anyways they can bring in 5 kgs of gold in a year to India but don't know everyone would have that kind of money to buy 5 kgs every year..

This is what wikipedia says -

Takshashila became a noted centre of learning (including the religious teachings of Hinduism) at least several centuries BCE, and continued to attract students from around the old world until the destruction of the city in the 5th century. At its height, it has been suggested that Takshashila exerted a sort of "intellectual suzerainty" over other centres of learning in India.,[25] and its primary concern was not with elementary, but higher education.[26] Generally, a student entered Takshashila at the age of sixteen. The Vedas, the ancient and the most revered Hindu scriptures, and the Eighteen Silpas or Arts, which included skills such as archery, hunting, and elephant lore, were taught, in addition to its law school, medical school, and school of military science.[27] Students came to Takshashila from far-off places such as Kashi, Kosala and Magadha, in spite of the long and arduous journey they had to undergo, on account of the excellence of the learned teachers there, all recognized as authorities on their respective subjects.[28][29]

Chanakya - the guru of economics and political science. Charak - The famous guru of Ayurveda. Panini - ancient grammarian and who created the grammar of Sanskrit were some of tha famous students of Takshashila.

Why were they destroyed?
Because education was apparently a threat to them. The same is the case with them(the extremists) today.

Visually it seems like a lot. There's this shop here, called Malabar Gold. I ventured into that place once. It was so sparkly and filled with Indians haggling over it like crazy. I don't know the stats, but perhaps the amount NRI's are sending back to India is part of that 80 Bn figure?

That really seems more religious and basic survival skills. Not at par with what Oxford teaches. Universities are known for their R&D.

The education of THOSE people might have been but the Mughals needed technology for warfare and construction. They gathered tons of new knowledge when they were around. They were even poets, and promoted the arts.

One should avoid blanket statements. They had enemies and took them down by whatever means necessary. Don't demonize them for following standard operating procedure of the old days.

That is why west is leading the world today with technological innovations. When there was golden period of science in europe from 15 th century with brilliant contributions from scientints like Newton, Galilio, Charles Darwin who changed face of human civilization. Most of asian nations including present day India was in clutches of various superstitions and kingdoms.
I won't say situation is much different today as most of Noble prize winners are mainly from Europe and Usa.

Lot of derail there. A gold shirt to liberation movement (I smelt the * word in your mind) to dalits to oppression of Muslims to Hindu terrorism. Duh ...

Those schools dealt in the matters ranging from religion to philosophy to administration to science. Out of those schools came the philosophies on theism and atheism and their effects on society. The same schools taught mathematics and science to help the priests predict the exact times of solar and lunar eclipses.

And because religion is the fundamental thread that binds people, indeed those schools came out of religion. However, they remained free of any religious dogmas and discussions and debates on validity and effects of religion occurred quite frequently.

While you compare them with Oxford and Cambridge, please do not forget that in their early times even Ox&Cam were religious schools. You are only using their modern face of the post WW 2 era to compare with Takshashila and Nalanda.

It is akin to saying that 100 years ago everyone was dumb because they didn't even know how to use facebook.

Look at it a bit differently - What was the percentage of intercontinental students at Cambridge and Oxford in their beginnings? Takshashila had a great number of European and Middle Eastern scholars that came as travelers and went back to benefit their people.
