Indian in US Convicted of Sexually Assaulting Sleeping Woman on Flight

As they say,
boys would be boys or
Indians would be rapists, errrr I mean Indians...

WASHINGTON: A 35-year-old Indian IT manager has been convicted of sexually assaulting a sleeping woman aboard a Detroit-bound flight in the US, media reports said on Friday.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy, who worked for an IT company for over two years, will be sentenced on December 12 by US District Judge Terrence Berg, The Detroit Newsreported.

Ramamoorthy faces up to life in prison. If released, he will be deported to India.

The verdict came seven months after he assaulted the 22-year-old woman during a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas while his wife sat in the next seat, the report said.

A federal jury in Michigan's largest city Detroit convicted Ramamoorthy, who lived in Rochester Hills city, of sexually assaulting the woman.

Following a five-day trial, the jury deliberated for less than four hours before convicting Ramamoorthy, it said.

"We will not tolerate the behaviour of anyone who takes advantage of victims who are in a vulnerable position, and we are glad the jury agreed," US Attorney Matthew Schneider said in a statement.

"We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out," Schneider said.

The woman said she was sitting in a window seat next to Ramamoorthy, whose wife was in the aisle seat.

The victim said that she fell asleep and woke up to discover a hand in her pants and noticed that her pants were unbuttoned and her shirt untied. When she woke up, the man stopped, and the woman alerted a flight attendant, the report said.

Ramamoorthy initially told investigators that he was in a deep sleep and did not do anything, it said.
Later, he told an FBI agent he "might have" undone the woman's bra and cupped her breast, according to court records, the report added.

I think India is vying to make this an Olympic sport eventually.

But seriously though Indian government and public needs to do something about this. It's gone way beyond the limits now, their's something seriously wrong in the thinking of their society and the way they react to these news is like nothing happened. It seems they have accepted this to be part of normal life, pretty much like US public has accepted school shootings to be normal.

You are right, but that does not mean you can touch a person (even if totally naked) without their consent, if you do then its a sexual assault.

Cupping breasts is cupping breasts. Let me tell something you the liberal way of thought. It may sound like trolling, but I am not. This is facts. In Western society, breasts aren’t considered private parts for both men and women. Have you heard of the “Free Nipples Movement”? Women are campaigning here for equal rights, so they can be able to show their nipples in public like men. So transcending to this practicular story. Cupping a man’s breasts is equal to cupping woman’s breasts. Which is not a big deal at all.

It won’t be considered sexual assault. The most it can be considered is involuntary physical touch. So maximum 1 month of jail.

Well I remember the details when this news came a few months ago that he was touching her inappropriately and then she woke up and screamed and the crew rushed to her rescue ...so that it is it... In Rapestan it is a minor offence and the court would have set him free after a little fine and reprimand but in the civilised world it is a major offence to take advantage of someone like that.

In India legal system is slow but hasn't collapsed. We have the example of media baron,Tarun Tezpal serving jail term for just a light banter and probing fingertip :-)

Some of the comments from Pakistanis and Indians on this thread just shows the culture in the Subcontinent where rape is condoned, sexual harassment is ok, the Subcontinent is disgusting, disgraceful.

Just because you can say something, doesn't mean you should say it.

There is no such thing as one subcontinent culture. Pakistanis are different and Indians are different. You won't find any of my posts condoning any such thing.

This man was an Indian. Unfortunately, rape culture is being perpetuated there by movies and music industry, and also the ruling party.

I have lived in the US for the past 18 years so please don’t tell me it is considered appropriate in this country to touch a woman’s breasts. It is sexual assault by any definition and has absolutely zero to do with a completely unrelated feminist movement! I am glad this douche bag got convicted for sexually assaulting this lady!

I don’t think this poster @Ishq Dewana is from the US.

Totally agree with you.

Really! Involuntary, the person in question unclipped her bra while she was a sleep and cupped her breast, how does that constitute as involuntary. That has intention and execution of the crime, this clearly leads to a minimum five year sentence.

Yes it happen's but I don't advocate for them to be released without serving their time.
And again if they let people get away that easy by just deporting them you do realize that crime rate of foreigners would sky rocket as it's not just these type of crimes. US has a big drug problem and all the people coming from south America will be free to commit crime and if they get caught just deport them and they'll come back into US illegal again and keep repeating the cycle.
So your argument has a basic flaw as courts don't punish just to teach the criminal, they punish people to warn the innocent of the consequences of committing a crime.
Finally what about the rights of the women he violated, shouldn't she get justice or according to you they can tell her we deported him now he can live a free man in another country and probably do stuff like this again, but hey you're safe.

Legal immigration and illegal immigration are two different things. The Indian in question was in US legally on a work visa, so this does not apply here.

The woman did receive justice, her attacker was convicted for his crime and will be sent to prison. If she's fine with her tax dollars being spent on his incarceration, then that's her choice. I think it's a waste of money, in my opinion. Let the Indians deal with him. We don't need predators like him in the US.

Why no punishment? because he is a fellow indian?
What makes you say his life is already a living hell?

I'm Indian-origin, but I'm a US national. I don't have Indian citizen nor do I live there. I'm saying this as a US citizen and US taxpayer that I don't want my tax dollars to be wasted on scum like this. There are enough predators in US to worry about those coming from foreign countries.

You need help.

Tylenol is for pain like aspirin, only Indians dot drowsy on it after getting caught molesting women on a plane full of people. Stop defending a pervert with your perverted logic.

Read on the story. Prabhu said that he toke Tylenol and was in deep sleep.

justice is served but what is the issue with these indian are indian womans are in short numbers in india or they become animals who dont care where they are what they are they do sexualy assault to children from well 9 months old to 95 years old

i agree there is a issue with south asian nations here even pakistan has few cases but in pakistan no one assault during travel etc while wife is sitting with him i dont understand what her wife were doing at that time might she be enjoying that assault with some one else so she dident noticed her husband what he was doing

hope indian get out of this sick mindset

On this occasion i will go ahead and support the Indian guy.
In general western justice system considers men as sex hungry monsters and any little accusation from a young white women towards a brown man is considered script from some holy book
