Indian FM offers conditional friendship to Pakistan

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: Extending a “hand of friendship” to Pakistan on Saturday, India’s new External Affairs Minister Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna reiterated that Islamabad must take credible action to dismantle the terror infrastructure on its soil if it wants to resume dialogue.

Responding to questions on whether India was ready to resume talks with Pakistan, he told a press conference: “We stand ready to extend our hand of friendship and partnership to Pakistan. It may take determined and credible action to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism that is operating there ... It is for Pakistan to take these necessary steps so that all of us can live in peace.”

Krishna said his country wanted a peaceful neighbourhood to sustain its economic growth. He also expressed a desire for stronger ties with the US, and pledged India’s support to those affected by the Tamil Tigers conflict in Sri Lanka.

India's new govt urges Pakistan to target militants

NEW DELHI, May 23 (Reuters) - India's new coalition government said on Saturday it was up to Pakistan to take the first step towards better ties by cracking down on militants on its soil.

"They should take determined and credible action to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism operating from their territory that has been the stumbling block," new Foreign Minister Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna told reporters soon after he was named to the post.

India has ruled out talks with Pakistan unless it moves against militants New Delhi said carried out attacks on Mumbai last November, in which at least 166 people were killed.

Pakistan says it has detained some suspects and sought more evidence from New Delhi for any further action.

Krishna, 77, a former chief minister of the state of Karnataka and governor of Maharashtra, said he would like India to be able to make peace with Pakistan.

"Generally we would like to live in peace with our neighbours. This has been our desire and we are pursuing it," Krishna said.

"We stand ready to extend our hand of friendship and partnership to Pakistan."

Analysts say that with a stronger mandate behind it and a weakened Hindu nationalist opposition, the new Congress-led coalition has a freer hand to manage ties with Pakistan.

While no major peace moves are considered likely, New Delhi could make small symbolic moves such as lifting of a travel advisory against visiting Pakistan imposed in December. (Reporting by Bappa Majumdar; Writing by Sanjeev Miglani; editing by Myra MacDonald)

That my friend is 'conditional friendship', if you want to look at it that way!

On the other hand, I am surprised at SM Krishna becoming a foreign minister! He was the CM of Karnataka, my home state, and did a lot to improve the infrastructure of Bangalore, before BJP messed it up again. He also helped in promoting Bangalore as an IT hub, set up the IT city etc. A very good administrator - in the same league as Gujrat CM Narendra Modi. I wonder how he would do as the EAM. Way to go Krishna!

Thats not called conditional friendship; that is called economic blackmail; dont fret when we send a couple of Babur's to visit your dams in the event of a war...

Hahah lol, so you would wish! Now now, as they say be careful what you wish for, it may come true.
That's geo-politics mate, economic blackmail et al. No matter how itchy 'your' trigger finger is, no sane authority/person in Pakistan wants to lob a couple of missiles, let alone be responsible for starting a war in the region.

Not to mention the thousands of consulates in Afghanistan.

But seriously, there is an arbitration mechanism, and it has been successfully used in the case of the Baglihar project.

NO friendship with India!

No mention of the thing until they hand over Indian Occupied Kashmir (Pakistan zameen) back to us, and ask for forgiveness for all of the innocent Muslims that they have killed and abused.

Friendship is not gonna happen, but India must take the first step and acknowledge their wrong first, before moving towards peace. India is the aggressor and must recognize that!

They must also stop exporting terrorism to Balochistan and the Tribal areas, and must ask for forgiveness to Pakistan for their crimes!
