Jayadeva doctors gift life to two Pakistani children

Twelve-year-old Haseeb and 13-year-old Qunoot Baig — two Pakistani children from Sind province suffering from congenital heart disease — got a new lease of life after doctors from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.

While Haseeb, son of Wajahat Ali and Saheeda, teachers in Digri of Sind, underwent intra-cardiac repair of Tetrology of Fallot (TOF), Qunoot Baig, daughter of Raffat abd Mirza Afzal Baig, a medical representative in Hyderabad of Sind province, underwent an arterial switch operation.

Blue babies

Although both the children were “blue babies,” Qunoot suffered from “transposition of great arteries” wherein the aorta and pulmonary arteries arise from opposite ventricles.

They were referred to Jayadeva through Pakistan's Rotary Club after doctors in Karachi threw up their hands citing lack of technology and expertise, said Institute Director C.N. Manjunath.

Addressing presspersons on Friday, Dr. Manjunath along with the team which performed the surgery, said: “Ninety per cent of children who suffer from this disease don't survive beyond one year; an open heart surgery has to be done within the first 60 days of birth. Only 10 per cent reach adolescence. These children were lucky as one of their heart valves was moderately narrow that prevented increased blood flow to the lungs.”

The institute's cardiothoracic surgeons Devanand and P.S. Seetharama Bhat and paediatric cardiologist Jayaranganath along with their team performed the complex open heart surgery.

“The approximate cost of each surgery is Rs. 90,000 and half of this has been shared by the Badalchand Chordia Trust and Ranka Steel Pvt. Ltd. and Rotary International District 3190. The rest was borne by us,” Dr. Manjunath said.

I doubt if the Indian doctors had more technology or equipment.

We have world class doctors in Karachi.

Also, the doctors in India helped "Save" life.

They didn't gift life, that's a wrong statement there, as the one who gift's life is the god.

Indian doctors are among the best. I hope they continue to do the good work of saving lives. Greed is an enemy they have to fight. Saving foreign children earns more media coverage but our children are as precious.

Pakistanis never be grateful to whatever India or Indians does. What a waste of a thread. This will eventually lead to trolling just like the similar ones previously. They'll try to belittle the doctors effort, we try to uphold them. This will go on for few hours until under moderation thread will be closed.

Pakistanis wont send their children to India of they did not trust us. But why do you expect them to fall at your feet. We did what was expected.

My only concern is whether the hospital subsidize Indian children too. If not, it is also showmanship and politics.

The indian doctors were doing their job. This is what they are paid for. There are millions of cases like this around the world everyday.

Nothing new. Nothing surprising.

Anyways, Allah bless those 2 children and wish them a happy, healthy and prosperous life.

My point was why to have this thread at all. 'Fall at my feet'? where did you get that impression? All I want to see is a simple acknowledgment. I won't need that too really but belittling the doctors efforts is something I can't comprehend.

I don't think its a showmanship or politics, its a goodwill gesture to show we want peace as well. That we are here in time of your need. Its something that would allay apprehensions of travelling to India for their medical needs. Its saying that we are all the same. Why do you have to see everything negatively? Obviously if they are from a different country it would be a non news, isn't it? India is seen as an arch enemy by Pakistan but not every other country in the world.

Show you care about our troubles?

How about stop sponsering terrorists in our country? Stop laughing at the bombings and disasters in Pakistan?

Well it looks condescending towards them. Also, as I said this goodwill gesture and the advertisement of it, is counterproductive. Better it should be business as usual, come pay and get treated.
We wont tolerate if somebody from west says how some "bechare" poor Indian kids are getting food due to their funding. Try to understand from others pov.

I don't really see it that way. May be article could have been more polite. But these articles are necessary to reach the masses to convey a peace message. Obviously it better than articles on war.

May be we both have different point of views. I see these articles as a means to improve people to people contact and cooperation. It depends on how you see it. Do you really think Pakistanis would have said the same thing if the doctors were Chinese?

Well exactly my point. China is their friend who they trust. Any help from us(followed by advertisement) will be seen with suspicion by them, for very good reason.
