Thats because MoD has refused to fund 360 degree version because they don't want to increase DRDO's budget but are ready to pay higher costs for 3 more AWACS from Israel.

Also, IAF has delayed DRDO AWACS project first by sitting on project files for 3 years(it took IAF 3 years to tell DRDO what design parameters they want) and now, suddenly IAF is saying - "we have changed our mind now. We don't want Embraer platform. Please re-do whole design and choose a different aircraft."

And, people think that DRDO is to blame. Media is cleverly hiding corruption nexus behind "imports" policy.

IAF has not changed its mind as you suggest, they are using embraer for battlefield surveillance.We are on track to get 12 Phalcons though platform might change( airbus and boeing are pushing) also we will get 6 battlefield survelliance aeroplanes in the form of embraer( 3 ordered and 3 on option).This things in toto are a mighty punch.Btw Indian navy has its own plans.

India is also interested in the highly rated Israeli G550 surveilance fleet, there are currently 9 in operating with IsAF and 3 more in order.

This fleet was suppose to have participated in Israel air strikes last year to destroy a secret nuclear reactor in Syria and convoys carrying arms in Sudan before they reached Hamas militants in the Gaza strip.

One of these have been already shipped to Singapore.

India to Buy A-50EI AWACS from Russia


The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun negotiating for nine more A-50EI aircraft from Russia. India aims to acquire three of the A-50EI aircraft under the main contract and have another six in an option.

The recent negotiations are a part of a trilateral contract between Russia, India and Israel, which was formalised in October 2003. As a part of the contract for the supply of the A-50EI aircraft, Russia is represented by the firms Beriev, Ilyushin and Vega while Israel is represented by ELTA Electronics Industries, which supplies the Falcon radar for the aircraft.

The A-50EI airborne early warning aircraft is the export version of the Beriev A-50 Shmel, with the Phalcon radar from Israel. The Russian firm Beriev manufactured the A-50 aircraft and it is based on the Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft with PS-90A engines.

While India received the first A-50EI from Russia in mid 2009, the rest of the two are expected to be supplied to India this year. As for the Indian Air Force, it has been a long wait for these airborne early warning aircraft. Originally, Israel and India signed a US$1.1 billion deal, according to which Israeli Aircraft Industries would deliver the Indian Air Force three Phalcon Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) radar system in March 2004. India signed a separate deal with the Ilyushin Corporation of Russia for the supply of three Il-76-based A-50EI heavy-lift aircraft which were to be used as platforms for these radar systems, for an additional US$500 million. In November 2007, the Indian Defence Ministry faced major delays in the supply of the Russian Il-76 platform and the induction of the Phalcon radar was now postponed to 2009-10.

Nothing really confirmed, yet. We see new news about it nearly every month but the numbers change all the time. Clear is only 3 Phalcons and 3 DRDO AWACS are on order, with 3 more of each optional.
We see the same confusing development at the shore based AWACS for IN. Although there are reports that IN has interest in those and E-2D, as well as G550 Phalcon might be presented to them, no decision was taken.

My guss is, everything is waiting for DRDO to finally induct their system and if it is capable enough, they might go for that instead of higher numbers of foreign system. Just like we waited so long for LCA to decide how many MRCA/MMRCA we will buy.
