New Delhi, May 25 (PTI) Gearing up its soldiers for future warfare, the Indian Army feels there is an "urgent need" to replace the indigenously developed and manufactured INSAS series of rifles.

"There is an urgent need to develop rifles, carbines and light machine guns of 5.56mm calibre to replace the existing INSAS class of weapons," it said in the Defence Ministry?s ?Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap? document.

The INSAS rifles, designed by the DRDO, were inducted into the Armed forces in the 90s and have been used in the Kargil war and counter-insurgency operations also.

In its early days with the Army, the rifles faced reliability problems in the cold climate in places such as Kashmir valley and Siachen glacier.

Due to the cold weather, the rifles would jam occasionally and the polymer magazines would crack. These problems were later corrected by the manufacturers.

Indian army represent Indian psyche. Love for imported stuff and lack of strategic planning(delayed LCA like projects by 20 years by closing down HAL in 1970s).

US army is investing their own money in R&D projects in universities not only across the USA but also in Indian IIT.

US department of defense owns several patents at IIT Bombay in AI algorithms area.

How much money Indian army invested in our own IIT? Zero.

Americans deserve to be master of India because they have brains. Indians are too busy waiting outside American embassy.

Also, Indian army retired Generals were the first who offered their "rented" services to US Army operations in Iraq. Indian government was so embarrassed with their insubordination that they had to issue a directive to Army to stop ex-Generals from going to USA.

So much for the glory of corrupt Indian army!

this article is crap, army is quite satisfied with insas for its infantry role, for special forces we already import tavore & AK class rifles. insas LMG is also a kick *** gun ,our carbine verson 5.56mm also in pipeline .there is nothing DRDO can't copy or create its own rifles ,but it need to give equal importance to it's look ,insas's orange furniture is too bright for an assault rifle

Bro, that was not called for, nobody can be master of India.
I know you are a little upset with our progress and lack of judgment on many things.

However just wait for some more time, and you will know. Your country is great after 400 years under foreign rule and just after 60 years of independence.

Think where we are now compared to countries with the same age!!!

Those guns would mean almost a 200%increase in cost or greater.

DRDO is working on a new set of Guns for the F-INSAS program,
there are also programs wit Israile involved.

Whatever it is they have to be produced locally , with local prices.
Importing over 2 million rifles is simply not feasible.

I agree with you 100%. There is wide scale corruption throughout the Indian Army. When the other armed wings are developing in house projects with collaboration from Universities, the Indian Army is far behind. ALL OF US NEED TO STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND FOCUS ON THE ISSUES AT HAND. When the General Kapoor recently announced that there was a huge shortage in night vision goggles for Army tanks, it should have aroused some suspicion. Night vision goggles have been in use since the 70's. What have we been doing. We just released a tender for hovercraft while Pakistan has been using it for sometimes now. STOP MAKING EXCUSES! The only way to correct these problems is start acknowledging the problems at hand. We are comparing ourselves to other countries who have gained independence around the same time as us. That is our first mistake; if we want to be a superpower we need to start comparing ourselves to superpowers. The Indian army has been a source of corruption for sometime. The media should have never released details of phone tapping in the public; The gov't should have gone after every corrupt babu. Why do announce all our projects? That is such a fundamental flaw in our national security. First of, by making such announcements public we give our enemies the ability to cap our offensive and defensive capabilities. Manpower is our greatest resource, we should out it to work. China did a lot when it lacked sufficient modern weapons. It still made sure its borders were tightly secured....with what? MANPOWER.

The only reason I am pissed is that I see contracts given to foreign consulting on defense projects. For some things, it is crucial like tech related issues. When it comes to security and military planning, we should be above all par none. I think one of the biggest issues is that we don't allow NRI's to retain their citizenship while NRI's have helped India tremendously. It is a serious barrier to improvement in various aspects of the average Indian. NRI's have been exposed to more ideas and a western way of thinking. India should be doing more to utilize it for its benefit. There are many patriotic NRI's. Think about it, Pakistan allows citizenship for those who leave the country and their kin. Why should Indians who love India be forced to give it up?>

INSAS has over a decade of service and many more in the paramilitary and police services

It is a mediocre rifle by many standards , but has decent accuracy.
It was a good first gun .

But we can do better and we know it.

WONDER WHY? ur army wants to replace it?

There is no such think as a first gun or a mediocre gun...a gun is a gun it has to be of some standard in its class.
For example a G3A3 is a standard or a world class gun in its class 7.62 mm.and M-4 is standard in its class 5.62 mm...etc

But we can do better and we know it.

Every human or state can do better.

Is this INSAS?tht army wants to replace?hell is it even in service?
Till then BYE:wave:

Old news but somewhat relevent.

Indian Army To Invest In F-INSAS (Future Infantry Soldier as a System) Programme

The 1.1 million-strong Indian Army is going hi-tech to turn its troops into fighting machines of the 21 century, complete with the latest multi-function weaponry and uniforms with sensors to monitor their health parameters.

"We have put in place an action plan to modernize the armed forces in all dimensions. A project, code-named F-INSAS (Future Infantry Soldier as a System), has been taken up to train futuristic soldiers, equipped with latest weaponry, communication network and instant access to information on the battlefield," Chief of Army Staff General Joginder Jaswant Singh said.

"In my view, the next war will be won by the side that is adept at high technology with all-weather fighting capability," the army chief said on the sidelines of a military function here.

With IT and electronic gadgets calling the shots in the armed forces worldwide, the Indian Army is gearing up to equip its soldiers with war-fighting capability and to prevent battle fatigue.

"As in civilian and other sectors, we would like to make optimal use of ICT (information and communication technology) for which Indian tech firms are known worldwide. We will be investing substantially to make our operations -from war zones to civil lines - digital, with seamless connectivity for online access to information systems," Singh said.

Under the F-INSAS project, the troops will be put on a multi-mission mode to accomplish different tasks with speed, precision and lethality. In the first phase, to be completed by 2012, the infantry soldiers will be equipped with modular weapon systems that will have multi-functions.

Thermal imagers, sensors and night vision equipment, currently deployed in weapon systems such as artillery and main battle tanks, will be customised to make them portable for carrying by the soldiers in the battle ground.

"Apart from imparting modern training and providing hi-tech gadgets, we are also working on a new attire that will enable the troops carry the extra load and resist impact of chemical warfare. The new uniform will have vests with sensors to monitor their health parameters and provide quick medical relief," Singh pointed out.

Singh said during his visit to the US this month he had a first hand account of the training systems and the latest equipment being used by the American army for combat operations.

"Though my recent visit to the US was to enhance our military-to-military ties, as strategic partners we exchanged views on several issues relating to transforming the armed forces for the future, on how to modernise the equipment and handle challenges of low-intensity conflicts. I also got acquainted with their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan," Singh disclosed.

As part of its strategic military ties, the Indian Army plans to take the joint exercises with the US Army to the battalion level from the platoon and company levels at which it had four such exercises so far.
