Army studying ‘lake’ on Pak-China road1

New Delhi, June 12: The Indian Army is studying the military implications of the formation of an artificial lake that has blocked the Karakoram Highway in Pakistan -occupied Kashmir, the only land route linking Pakistan and China through the strategic Khunjerab pass.

Confirming this, defence sources said the Army is studying the effects of the disruption caused by the artificial lake on Sino-Pakistan military trade and clandestine movement of armaments on the Karakoram Highway. Indian defence sources said the movement of military equipment via the land route between China and Pakistan has been affected.

The 20-km-long artificial lake was created in January this year after a landslide hit the picturesque Hunza valley in the Northern Areas of Gilgit-Baltistan in ***.

The Army estimates it could take one-and-a-half years for normalcy to be restored to the functioning of the highway, which is also referred to by the Pakistanis as the “Friendship Highway” to emphasise its close ties with China.

Sources said the artificial lake and its consequences had unnerved the Pakistani military and civilian leadership with both the Pakistan Army Chief, Gen. Ashraf Kayani, and the PM, Mr Yousuf Raza Gilani, visiting the site to assess the fallout. The Karakoram Highway connects Gilgit in *** with China’s troubled Xinjiang province.

The Indian military is keenly watching the situation since a large number of variants of Chinese and North Korean missiles are believed to have made their way to Pakistan from China in the past via the Karakoram Highway. Both China and Pakistan have always denied this.

The landslide has also come as a setback to envisaged rail links through the Karakoram Highway which could further bolster movement of military equipment between Pakistan and China.

The establishment of a motorable land route between the two countries became possible following the 1963 Sino-Pakistan agreement under which Pakistan illegally ceded over 5,000 sq. km of land in North Kashmir to China.

mark my words......................................................................the road will be built again.:P

Obviously the damaged part of the road will be rebuilt. Not because of the military trade, but because it affects daily trade worth millions of local people.

As far as trade of military is concerned, i don't think the road is a preffered route. It is long, very unpredictable since many parts are susceptible to land slides and is often closed for hours.

Plus the military trade can always take place through air.

Not only air but through sea as well.In fact the karakoram route is soo rough only a fool would think that we would transfer weapons from this route.

How very interesting :coffee:

what other land links do Pak and China have ?

Please qualify the nationality when using things like PM, President, Army Air Force.

The defence trade is mainly depend on land but it comprises of equipments which is cheap and not heavier in size,,but lake definitely create problems for trade in both the countries....

Brain if you remove word land:china::pakistan:

I suppose the entire border and land link has been paved , natural barriers removed.

No need for major roads, High ways , rail tracks.

By your information i can assume that none of that is need for any of that, You lot are are very happy with whatever infrastructure or lack of with regards to links with China.

Thanks , for you clear and succinct information.

if anybody else has better information , ill be glad to hear it.:coffee:

In simple words army is looking up for the possibilities and implications in times of war to blow the lake to cut off pak's only lank link with china.

The lake won't be there to be blown in a few weeks. It became a lake because it's way was blocked by a massive land slide. Water is now flowing out through a spillway built by engineers and the lake level is decreasing every day.

However, I don't mind Indian Army wasting time over it.

If someone wants to learn the art of exaggeration, going to India and spending some time with their media would be the best training & becoming an expert in "mirchi masala news".

Just look at the highlighted parts :rofl:

Pakistan gets its missiles from China through this road, if that is so what are those huge missile manufacturing facilities for ???

It gets its armaments from this road, what kind of armaments ?? Seriously what is that we are not manufacturing ourselves which needs daily truck loads coming from China with arms.

PM, COAS unnerved ??? Really ?? Or are they visiting due to their own reasons, PM visited as for his political reasons, while COAS as army is looking after the clearance project and Chief goes everywhere, where army is involved. If they had been unnerved, they would have gone a multiple of times, which they haven't, a single visit for each of them so far since this issue came up.

And limited traffic is going on the Karakoram Highway.

This is not the only route, aerial route and sea lane routes are available also incase emergency supplies are to shifted, which for now are not required, as PDF have sufficient stocks available.

May parts of missiles that would be assembled in your facilities

There are no parts of the missile coming from there, we are completely building everything within Pakistan and researching fully and making new variants.

Nothing comes from China.
