The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | Nation | India, US plan record 9 army drills

New Delhi, April 4: The Indian and US armies will have nine joint drills this year, a record of sorts even at a time both countries have been increasing the complexity and frequency of military exchanges.

Some of the drills planned for this year will be war games built around battle scenarios and the others briefing sessions on battlefield tactics.

A separate programme of exchanges for the air forces and the navies of the two countries is being discussed. With no other single country does the Indian military have as many exchanges as it does with the US.

“We have reached a historic threshold with our relationship between the two countries,” the commanding general of the US Army Pacific, Lt General Benjamin R. Mixon, said. “The operations we do together are reaching a complexity of the highest level.”

The top brass of the Indian Army and the US Army Pacific, Marine Forces Pacific and the Special Operations Command decided on the programme of the exercises for 2010-2011 at meetings of the executive steering group (ESG) of the two sides in the Indian Army’s western command headquarters in Chandimandir, near Chandigarh, last month.

Mixon led the US delegation. The Indian team was led by the director-general of military operations (DGMO), Lt General A.S. Sekhon.

Some of the drills will involve amphibious operations, meaning the US Marines, the Indian Navy and a brigade of the Indian Army will take part in landing operations from the sea.

The India-US ESG was set up in 1995 but meetings were suspended after the Indian nuclear tests in 1998. The relations were revived in 2002.

The ESG is one of the committees under the overarching India-US defence policy group (DPG).

“This forum provides senior leaders the opportunity to come together to chart out a programme of exchanges for the US and Indian armies,” a US Army Pacific statement quoting the commanding Mixon said.

In the Chandigarh conference, representatives of the two sides exchanged notes from their operations on the ground.

“It was good to glean information from the Indian Army officers about their immense experience with IED (improvised explosive devices) threats,” a statement quoting Colonel Ed Toy, director, IED Fusion Center, said.

Most US casualties in Iraq have been caused by IEDs. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army has been dealing with IEDs used by militants for more than 20 years now.

In the nine drills that have been planned, the types of forces to be involved will cover the mechanised infantry, IED detection and disposal squads, artillery, aviation and psychological operations.

Last year, the two armies held their largest joint exercise ever in Yudh Abhyas for which the US carried out the largest deployment of Stryker vehicles outside Iraq and Afghanistan.

The multi-role ground operations vehicles were shipped and flown to Babina, the Indian Army’s armoured corps range.

Army prepares for future conflict with largest summer wargame- Hindustan Times

The Army's largest summer wargame in recent years today concluded in the Rajasthan deserts along the borders with Pakistan, showcasing its ability to inflict maximum damage on enemy targets in shortest possible time.

The elite 1 'Strike' Corps participated in the exercise named 'Yodha Shakti' that exhibited the resolve and the capability of the Indian Army to operate in most hostile weather conditions to achieve decisive victory for the nation, an Army spokesperson said in a press statement.

The final phase of the exercise was witnessed by Army Chief General VK Singh along with South Western Army Commander Lt Gen CKS Sabu, and a large number of senior officers of the Army and Air Force.

Army's Southern and Western Commanders and Western Air Command and South Western Air Command chiefs too were present on the occasion.

Corps Commander Lt Gen AK Singh briefed the Army Chief on the operational readiness, new concepts which were tried and the optimisation of force multipliers.

The Army Chief also interacted with the rank and file of the Strike Corps and expressed his appreciation on their high standard of professionalism, training and motivation.

'Yodha Shakti' fused the synergy of all arms and services of the Army and the land-air synergy between the Army and the Air Force essential for conducting mechanised predominant operations deep inside enemy territory.

"The operations were executed with overwhelming momentum and tempo. State-of-the-art technology provided the cutting edge. The induction of night vision capabilities in the mechanised forces enables a 24/7 dynamic operational capability," the spokesperson said.

The Army Chiefs and other senior officials also witnessed operational manoeuvres including the mechanised forces predominant attack, heliborne operations behind the 'enemy' lines, airborne drop by paratroopers and multiple manoeuvres by the mechanised forces and attack helicopters in the operational depth with intense synergy and integration between the Army and Air Force.

The aerial re-supply to the armoured division deep inside enemy territory provided it with requisite logistics surge capability for enhanced operational reach, the release said.

"As a reflection of the leadership ethos of the Indian Army, the para drop was led by Army Vice Chief Lt Gen P Bhardwaj, a highly experienced and decorated Para Officer," the spokesperson said.

The Army Chief expressed satisfaction at the meaningful training conducted to prepare for the future security challenges to the nation and complimented the operational readiness of the troops that will enable it to achieve a decisive victory in any future conflict, he added

India, Russia to hold joint military drill

India and Russia will hold a joint military drill nicknamed Indra-2010 with the involvement of more than 150 Russian servicemen from the motorised mountain infantry brigade.

A Russian army delegation is currently in India to finalise the arrangements.

"The INDRA-2010 war games will be held on the Indian soil in autumn, in which 150 Russian servicemen from the motorised mountain infantry brigade will take part," Land Forces spokesman Col Oleg Yushkov here said.

India and Russia have been holding joint war games for several years now with the involvement of all the three services of their armed forces.

In 2007 and 2008, the paratroopers from the two nations had carried out joint anti-terror war games in Agra and Russia's Pskov region bordering on NATO-member Estonia.

Russia, which has raised independent motorised (mountain) brigade in the wake of militancy and its frontiers rolling back to North Caucasus following the Soviet collapse, is keen to learn from India's experience of mountain warfare and training expertise.

India, France to hold joint air combat exercise next month - India - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Six Indian Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, two IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft and a IL-78 mid-air refueller will be leaving for France for a joint air combat exercise with the French Air Force next month.

The exercise, Garuda-IV, will be held at the Istres airbase in France from June 14 to 25. "The exercise will help to further enhance interoperability between the Indian and French air forces since pilots as well as the ground crew will get to see each other's operational, technical and administrative practices from close quarters," said an officer.

The exercise comes at a time when India and France are all set now to ink the around Rs 10,000 crore deal to upgrade the 56 Mirage-2000 fighter jets in IAF's combat fleet. The first four to six Mirages will be upgraded in France, with the rest 50 or so being upgraded in India by Hindustan Aeronautics under transfer of technology.

Under the upgrade, the entire airframe will be stripped down to be re-wired and re-equipped with new avionics, mission computers, glass cockpits, helmet-mounted displays, electronic warfare suites and of course weapon systems to extend and enhance the operational life of the multi-role fighters by around 20 years. India had first inducted 40 Mirages in the mid-1980s, with over 20 more being bought in later years. IAF has had a 'good' experience with the fighters, which successfully carried out 'targeted bombings' during the 1999 Kargil conflict.

India's defence ties with France are quite broad-based, including as they do the over Rs 20,000-crore project to build six French Scorpene submarines currently underway at Mazagon Docks.

France, of course, has also offered its multi-role Rafale fighter for the ongoing competition in the the gigantic $10.4-billion project to supply 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft to IAF.

Germany keen on joint air combat exercises with India - dnaindia.com

Berlin: Germany is exploring options of conducting joint air combat exercises with the Indian Air Force (IAF) even as it looks at India as a market for the the EADS' Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, its Air chief Aarne Kreuzinger-Janick said here today.

"India does joint combat training with US, France, Russia and other countries. In future, we hope Germany and India can engage in such exercises," Kreuzinger-Janick said here on the sidelines of the Berlin Air Show.

India holds joint combat exercises with friendly countries from time to time and is a much sought after nation for the NATO countries for combined wargaming.

Indian and French air force have been involved in joint air training, named Garuda, for several years now and the fourth edition of these exercises will take place in France this month.

These are held once in two years and both the countries take turns in playing host to these exercises.

Kreuzinger-Janick agreed that Garuda could be a model for India and Germany to "look at" for its joint air exercises.

US and India hold joint exercises for the army and the navy as well.

"But we (India and Germany) need to find an environment where we can do that. We are also talking about joint exercises with the Indian navy and army," Kreuzinger-Janick said.

Germany has already discussed the issue with the Indian government but an understanding has not been reached yet.

"Not yet. But we are in talks with India on joint exercises. Perhaps, we can have a programme in future," he told Indian reporters in reply to a question.

He insisted that Indo-German air exercises could be held periodically not only in one of the two countries but also in
Alaska, Sardinia or in some area along the Mediterranean Sea.
