Thiruvananthapuram: The three-day 'Dakshin Abhyas' exercise which aims at practicing the operational plans of Southern Air Command concluded here on Thursday.

The quarterly exercise, which began on June 16, was conducted at all stations under the Southern Air Command.

During the rigorous exercise, the ability and readiness of Command and all Air Force Stations under the Command were put to real time test by creating simulated contingencies both by day and night thereby enabling the commanders to plan and execute air operations with assets at their disposal, a defence release said.

This exercise also enables the commanders to identify shortcomings in the existing plans to deal with sub-conventional threats and validate the efficacy of operational and ground defence plans, the release stated.

The exercise included movement of combat elements to deal with simulated sub-conventional threat developing rapidly in the Southern Peninsula, it said.

Contingencies also included insertion of Special Forces (Garuds) into sensitive locations and full cycle of response, it said.

The exercise also involved activation of HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief) missions, wherein large scale air evacuation of casualties was practised.

The exercise was a good success as all its objectives were successfully achieved, the release added.

The show would include a performance by the IAF skydiving team, “Akash Ganga”, which would enthral viewers with high altitude dare devilry.

The team consists of some of the finest parachutists of the IAF, whose exploits include skydiving over the North and South Poles.
