Which then makes me ask a question, what did the RAF use as a proper fighter until 2006? What did they use for air superiority?

Because they were (and are) Part of NATO and any aircraft headed towards UK airspace is intercepted by several NATO jets on its way
Before the Tornado they did have the F-4 Phantom and the Electric Lightning

AFA I remeber the deal was gonna be somewhere around 4-5 billion with maintainance thrown in.

So either we are having a follow on contract for the bells and whistles for these 10 birds or.....

Actually the whole deal is 4.1+ billion.I think the 1.78 Billion there is advance payment to get the assembly going

1.78 is for only Boeing, just to make the aircraft, the Engine contract is again different, the maintenance cost and contract is again different...

As one example, India can expect to pay another $380 million or so for the 40 F117 engines that will equip these planes. They will be installed under this contract, but are not bought under it.
