Indian Air Force MiG-29 Aircraft
- A +
Indian Air Force’s MiG-29 combat aircraft upgradation is in final stages.

The 11 Base Repair Depot (11 BRD) of Air Force Station at Ojhar in Nashik which undertakes maintenance and overhauling MiG series combat aircraft, is currently engaged in upgradation of MiG 29, PTI reported Friday.

Group Captain and Station Commander of Air Force Station, Ojhar, P K Anand also said at the depot yesterday that overhauling of MiG23 has been stopped since 2015.

"Since 1996, our depot overhauled a number of aircraft and even upgraded them," he added.

The upgraded MiG29 combat aircraft is fully equipped for delivering weapons, including missiles, increasing its capability, Group Captain and Station PRO, N Chaturvedi said.

The depot engineers have made most of the changes and enhanced the aircraft by using 90 per cent of 'indigenous spares parts', produced in Nashik-based industrial units, Chaturvedi added.

How potent are these upgraded Mig-29's compared to it's other 4th Gen peers? Any new weapon systems included?

. . .
Mig-29 has a special place in every Indian kid growing up in the 90s.
I recall back at atlas, we had managed to get the rd engine and plugged it into cheetah fighter. It rang circles around the atar engine which we were using from F1-C. It was a POC at the time. i was working on the EW toolkit which was being installed on it for a client show; it never materialised.

Regretfully we never got to see mig-29 in our skies at any show.

This aircraft has an unparalleled maneuverability. We must equip it with best in clss electronics and that will make it a unique aircraft.

This airfract has superior avionics
This aircraft has a sophisicated radar system
This aircraft is equipped with powerful armaments
This aircraft is powered by advanced engines

care to explain y u think it has 'unparalleled maneuverability'?

Because it has that because of superior T/W ratio. I am saying what it is.
Just look at the wheels and mud guards... it can take off from dirt fields any time; other western fights need clean runways.
Always interesting with Russians/Soviets - they could never put a reliable passenger car or fridge or radio, but they can build very good aircraft, rifles, helos to mention a few.

I think india should postpone surgical strikes till rafael and migs are ready

Additional usability (full glass cockpit with NVG compatibility and HMSD), enhanced range through integration of a IFR probe and increased internal fuel capacity along with greater survivability with brand new EW systems (including AESA based jammers) are the key features of this upgrade.

so all these updates brings this fulcrum to be on par with Mirage 2000 ?

The upgraded IAF Mirage 2000s will be superior thanks to its advanced electronic systems (some of which are borrowed from the Rafale) but the MiG-29UPGs are certainly some of the most advanced and capable jets in the region and this upgrade has tackled some of its key weak points (situational awareness, limited endurance and weak EW systems).

Between them though (Mirage and MiG-29) the IAF has a fleet of around 100 jets that could take on pretty much any other jet in the region and are superior in many ways.
