Indian Acquisition of Russian Akula

NEW DELHI - Moscow has told New Delhi that it remains committed to leasing a nuclear submarine to the Indian Navy despite the Nov. 8 accident that killed 20 crew members aboard a Russian nuclear sub, say Indian Defence Ministry sources.

The Akula-2 nuclear-powered attack submarine, the Nerpa, which is being built by Russia for the Indian Navy, was on sea trials off the Sea of Japan Nov. 8 when 20 personnel were killed in an accident reportedly involving activation of the submarine's fire-fighting system.

However, the sea trials of the submarine have been temporarily halted, said sources. The Indian Defence Ministry has already asked the Russian yard building the submarine to extend the trials.

The Indian Navy is acquiring the Nerpa in the run-up to its own secretive, classified nuclear submarine Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV) under construction. The crew trained on the leased Nerpa would eventually take over the indigenous ATV, expected to be inducted by 2010-11.

The nuclear submarines will give India the third leg of its nuclear triad by acquiring submarine-launched nuclear capable missiles

There is a Golden history of Russian subs, I hope India would Never have cases like K-19 and many other subs who went missing mysteriously.

Any one who threatens our Security.

Yeah we saw that when the Great blue water Navy failed to Engage the terrorist ships even when full fledged exercise was being conducted to save India From the Terrorist attacks and this was the main objective of that Exercise.

Can Indian Navy run a short course for those officers who are serving in international waters so that they can Differentiate between a Thai fishing ship and a Somali Pirate's Mother ship.

Now and the such incidents happen. US had great Air force, could it stop 9/11. These things happen, we have to learn and move on and not let happen such incidents again.

Regarding the Somali pirate ship, you have to go through that thread. It was a case of mistaken identity, because people who were visible and threatening from the boat were Somali pirates who hijacked that trawler.

Russia likely to lease 'Shchuka-B' class nuke subs to India-Europe-World-The Times of India

Russia likely to lease 'Shchuka-B' class nuke subs to India
15 Dec 2008, 1916 hrs IST, PTI

MOSCOW: Russia could lease 'several' 'Shchuka-B' class nuclear attack submarines to India in coming years, a top official here said though the delivery of the first of the two nuke subs reportedly contracted by India is far behind schedule.

At the same time, the official had ruled out any plans by Moscow to strike similar deals with China.

"Yes, there is a real possibility of leasing for ten years several of our nuclear powered multi-role submarines of Project 971 of 'Shchuka-B' class," the Director of Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) Mikhail Dmitriyev was quoted as saying by ITAR-TASS.

The Russian offer comes as Indian Navy has formulated a 20 year plan to produce indigenously 24 conventional submarines. New Delhi had also contracted for two nuclear submarines from Moscow, but navy has projected that in the next 10 years India would need to acquire or build another 10-12 nuclear subs.

These nuclear submarines would be similar to the 'Nerpa' class, which was involved in an accident in November during final sea trials in Sea of Japan.

"This possibility can materialise in the coming years," he added.

Dmitriyev also denied that Moscow was negotiating supply of nuclear submarines to China.

"The question of supply of our multi role nuclear submarines to China does not exist, as unlike India, China never asked for them. That's why we never negotiated with China on their lease or sale," Dmitriyev said.

"This issue was also not raised at the Russian-Chinese Intergovernmental Commission session on December 11 in Beijing," he said.

The cat is coming out of the bag now, now there are subs which are going to be leased to SEVERAL hmmm there is something "daal mein kala" in this gorshakov saga

PARIS - The first of a new class of multipurpose Russian nuclear attack submarines currently in construction will be operational by 2010, a Russian news agency reported Nov. 19.

The Severodvinsk "will be operational in 2010," Ria Novosti said citing naval official Nicolas Kalisstratov.

Named after the White Sea port that houses the main Russian nuclear submarine base, the Severodvinsk is about 390 feet long and can navigate at a depth of about 1,970 feet.

It "will be able to perform every mission that could be asked of it by the state: attacking different targets when under water, on the surface or (by) land," according to a naval admiral.

thanks

Its an entirely new submarine and an untested one. I doubt Russia shall offer this to India. Lets wait and see.

One reason i can see is the loss of man power. It takes some time to get other experts of same capability on borad.
