Mugger is the local name for the thin mouthed "crocodile" species. Very docile creatures actually. Incapable of eating anything larger than a fish.
The Mugger is vulnerable, salties are far more dangerous and more common. There is said to be a 23ft monster that stalks the Sundarban National Park. Several fishermen have seen him and he is said to be a monster and has attacked and killed a tiger before, as it swam across.
And it goes back to Sanskrit Makar, makara? You joking right? You are confusing gharial and mugger. The gharial is the "thin mouthed" leather bag that eats fish. The mugger is a fcuking monster. Especially the ones found in Sunderban areas.
Muggers/Magar being vulnerable is not a bad thing. Those 18 ft long cretins should be extinct.
Sunderban is notorious for its man-eating tigers but people overlook the real threat - Magarmuch or the dreaded Indian crocodile. The Indian crocodile aka magarmuch is the largest crocdile found second only to the saltwater crocodiles found in Australia. They are known to grow minimum 15 feet in average while some are known to grow more than 18 feet. The thing about salt water crocs and magar is they will attack you if they feel like. They may not be hungry, feel threatened but nor no good reason they will attack you because they can. They are very very aggressive.
Here is a fun fact, the english word "mugger" is derived from the Indian crocodile aka magarmach. Not kidding, check it up it's true.
And it goes back to Sanskrit Makar, makara?
I've heard people use that term in Pakistan too !
Ya crocodile kahoo ya magar much kahoo yeh hybrid kiya cheeez haiii ?
Maybe I'm not writing the word right but think it doesNo clue about that. Maybe it does or maybe not.
Bravo to the lady! Saving her daughter. I have to say though it could have been a great deal worse had it been a Salt Water Crocodile, the species makes India its home as well.
Oh, also what is it with desi women and wooden objects used as weapons? My mum used to beat me and my brother with this:

Where did you get this from? The Mugger doesn't grow as large as you say & is certainly not as aggressive as you say. It is actually far from aggressive & only occasional attacks on people are noted. You seem to be confusing the rarer but far more dangerous salt water crocodile with the Mugger. The Sunderbans are home to the saltwater crocodiles (can grow upto 20 feet -known specimens in india, larger than the Australian counterparts). The Mugger is pretty harmless most of the time which is why this woman could use a bat to scare it away.
Yes magar grows big, 15 ft. Yes it is aggressive. No, Australian saltwater crocs are the largest. And the magars is CERTAINLY NOT harmless.
You are wrong. Largely harmless to humans.
There could be bigger crocodiles living in Australia and in the Nile in Africa
you are taking it a bit too personal mate...Tell that to the mother who had to fight a goddamned magar.
And its a humble request please do not come up with personal anecdotes. Magars have been known to attack humans and there have been documented cases of magars attacking humans. Sunderban itself is home to many magar serial killers.
I think the quote clarifies it. Australian salt water crocs are known to be the largest and the most psychotic.
Have you heard about Gustave? There is a documentary and even a movie Primeval based on him.
