Downward cycle? You acting like it's been like this for a long time. First it was due to sanctions, then we had a brief break now it's due to WoT heating up.

Btw, the 6% growth rate is indeed a prediction. If it happens, then it will indeed break the "downward cycle" like you call it (trend of growth rates in mere 2 year period now are being called cycles?).

So how much the numbers have changed since? I remember seeing an article in 2009 on the same issue, numbers didn't change by much at all.

I think you and Foxbat went a few rounds on this cycles and trends piece in the Iran thread where he showed a downward trend from 1990 and not last 2 years. As a matter of fact, the 3 years between 2001 and 2005 were the outliers in the whole trend..

About poverty numbers, with the kind of growth India has seen in last 5 years, these numbers are centainly dated.

Meanwhile in next five years India will grow to 3 trillion dollar economy, so may be by 2020 we will be close to 3 trillion .. now that means we will be able to help our poors to reduce poverty by a large margin

We are not helping them much now. Unless and until the corruption and diversion, non utilization/underutilization of funds are checked there wont be any difference.

Governance is a big factor. I have seen news regarding funds from central governments not used properly or has been diverted into nonrelavant projects or into somebody's pockets.

In our country still any politicians can do crores of corruption scandal and even if he is caught he is still rich.

For God's sake also help your fellow poor indians.

'More poor' in India than Africa

The new measure of poverty assesses household poverty

Eight Indian states account for more poor people than in the 26 poorest African countries combined, a new measure of global poverty has found.

The Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, have 421 million "poor" people, the study found.

This is more than the 410 million poor in the poorest African countries, it said.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures a range of "deprivations" at household levels.

Developed by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) with UN support, it will feature in the upcoming UNDP Human Development Report.

The measure assess a number of "deprivations" in households - from education to health to assets and services.

"The MPI is like a high resolution lens which reveals a vivid spectrum of challenges facing the poorest households," said OPHI director Dr Sabina Alkire.

The downward trend was from 1993 to 2002 I believe. And that was due to sanctions. We're out of sanctions now. Then we had decent growth from 2002 to 2007. Now from 2008 to 2010 there's again low growth. There's no one established pattern.

As far as poverty numbers are concerned, I mean... the facts are India had decent growth for about a decade before these numbers came out, yet they didn't change much. In 3 years, they could've dropped from 80% to 75% or 70% if you wanna be really optimistic. But I read an article last year, and I can't recall what website it was so I am not able to provide the link, which mentioned that the numbers had not changed much at all.

thanks for your concern. Duely noted ;)

If Pakistan grows this can only benefit India and the whole of the South asia, already due to the floods Indian exports have soared in things like cotton and vegetables to Pakistan.

2 contradictions..

1. The bogey of sanctions is all very well, but India grew pretty robustly during the sanctions as well.
2. The break in the downward trend for Pakistan was only from 2002 to 2005. From 2005, for last 4 years, its back to the downward slide in the growth rate. You can look up the picture Fox posted in the Iran thread

A relavant article

India GDP and Standard of Living

India GDP and Standard of Living are closely related as GDP features among the significant factors in the assessment of the standard of living. Standard of living comprises quality as well as amount of commodities offered for consumption by the citizens and the distribution system.

India GDP and Standard of Living Factors:

Factors required for the assessment of the standard of living includes:

Rate of poverty
Per capita income and income inequality
Standard of education
Medical facilities
Life expectancy
Social rights
Safety
Environmental condition
Cultural resources
GDP is dependent on a wide variety of factors like:
Private Consumption within the economy
Amount of spending by the central government on final goods and services
Gross imports
Capital Investments like buying of machinery, construction of dams, roads, mines etc.
Gross exports

India GDP and Standard of Living Comparative Analysis:

The substantial growth in various sectors like IT, Real Estate, ITES has led to the improvement of the standard of living at a constant rate. However, the statistical figures still delineate that approximately 27.5 % of the Indian population lives below the poverty line. The most significant indicator required to measure the standard of living is in realty per capita purchasing power parity-adjusted gross domestic product. A comparative analysis of the standard of living of India with other countries will aid in the assessment of the position of India in the standard of living chart.

Measurement of India GDP and Standard of Living:

GDP makes an assessment of India's national output by dividing the current GDP of India with the total population of the country. In the examination of overall production, GDP takes into account both the public as well as the private consumption accompanied with the manufacture of capital goods that consequently aid in the further production of commodities.

Alternative to India GDP and Standard of Living:

A recent innovation in the field of India GDP and Standard of Living can be used in place of per capita GDP in order to examine India's present material well -being. Subtracting military expenditures from the total consumption in order to identify the standard of living will do this. This new measure has substantially reduced the difference in material well being of the Indian citizens when compared with that of the foreign countries.

With The Recent Reviseded growth forcast of 9.7% for the Indian Economy in 2010-2011 the indians will add $126 billion to its GDP by March 2012.

This will Give the Indians a GDP of $1.3 trillion+

All the indications are that the Indian GDP is set to grow at near double digit growth over the Next 5 years. Infact many believe it will ovetake China as the fastetst growing GDP in the next few years.

In 3 Years time the Indian GDP will be in excess of $1.8 trillion
By growing at around 10% per annum India will be adding a staggering $180 billion a year to its GDP.

THIS IS INCOMPARISON to Pakistans entire GDP at $170 billion and growing at a useful but modest 4.0% ..

If the trajectory continues as is predicted and the WOT bogs Pakistan down for another 5 years India could grow to be NOT 8-1 IN SIZE OF gdp but more like 12-1 or 15-1 by 2020.

1) does it really matter?

2) do you think Pakistan's economy will not increase next 5 years?

3) Don't you think the ongoing projects i.e. completion of Gwadar project, Iran-Pakistan pipeline, electricity generated from cheaper sources such as Coal, Hydro and Wind.... production/export of Gold, Copper, Coal and other minerals, oil refineries being set up in the country, increase of export orders from the European union as per the Pak-EU Trade agreement, increase in agriculture production, completion of dams etc

will not increase Pakistan's Growth rate too?

4) Who is giving a damn about the increasing influence of India in this region? It has no impact on Pakistan whatsoever. Pakistanis care least about what India does or what she does not
