Yes @CD... agree, most of Asia barring a few countries are still developing and have a long way to go before they can provide basic standards of living to all. It is a herculean task no matter, but the right path is what matters and give it 10 or 20 more years and we will be able to show the rest of the world how things can be changed in half the time

Exactly right.

We're the ones with the advantage now. I mean look at the GDP growth rates. Both the GDP growth rates of China and India, are unsurpassed in history.

This is the "right time", to really start working hard. Infrastructure and technology are magnifying the speed at which we can develop ourselves.

OK, great. So why there are 340,000,000,000 million people in India below the poverty line?

do you know how many people were below the poverty line in china in 1978 which is when their economic reforms were started there?

do you know how many people were below the poverty line in china in 1996/8 which is where india today stands in relative terms vis-a-vis china?

do you know how many people were below the poverty line in india in 1991 which is when economic reforms were started in india and now compare today's poverty line with that period.

you have to realize countries like india and china are massive in size and in problems that get faced and when it comes to india, it is that much more difficult.

we have a lot of problems, there is the democracy which takes its own sweet time, central government wants to pace up the things but finds it hard because of coalition and vote bank politics, state governments which are the real players play their own politics.

we have home grown insurgencies which massively impact our growth prospects. the point here to be pondered is had these insurgencies been not around india would have been growing at a much-much faster pace.

we have tribals who do not want any sort of interference and they want to live the way they have lived for centuries. they are happy being that way.

our literacy rate is pretty low and more importantly and which is what really matters, people having minimum 10 years of formal education are way too less.

we have a hostile neighborhood which means india needs to spend much more on its defence than it would other wise.

the most important, the size of the population which today has become an asset was for the most part of india's independence a liability.

india faces problems that someone sitting outside cant even imagine, the scale is massive, so it is a slow process and there is not the slightest of the doubts that even if we were to maintain the same growth rate for the next 10 years we will still face more or less similar problems though the scale might have minimized.

what india requires is, atleast 25-30 years of 9-10% real gdp growth rate (which is what the PM articulates from time to time) with not more than 5% annualized inflation rate to have a society where extreme poverty completely gets eradicated, poverty percentage dramatically reduces which is no more than 1-3% of the population and where insurgencies give way to an all out nation building process. its a tough task but we now after near 60 years of independence have started getting leaders who understand all this well and are coming up with practical solutions to solve these problems.

last i heard nandan nilekani could possibly be the next congress PM candidate for the 2014 elections, now you can imagine the levels that are being raised. more about mr nandan - Nandan Nilekani - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At this point of the thread I would like to make a point to our Pakistani friends that stop pointing out the fallacies and poverty in India and work forward with the positive spirit. Take the positives out of what India and China are doing and move to inculcating a similar environment for your economy as well.
Peace out...

Pretty much all I have seen you talk about on this forum is how India is so good and will keep getting much better than Pakistan. That's like the only thing you've ever discussed. Yes, we get the point that Indian GDP is high compared to us (not that different in terms of per capita) and it's growing. You seem to have some sort of an obsession when it comes to these things.

have you seen Omar's threads ? now that is what you call obsession my friend.

All of you indian members here are in denial about your country. Your country is still the country with the largest population of poverty stricken people in the world. I can find hundreds of other neutral and indian articles from this year about 400 million+ indians living in utter poverty in india and high rise of GDP not benefiting those indians at all, you indians will continue shuting your eyes and ears and will continue singing your shining india tune.

With due respect, can i post pics of your country and i\'m sure it will make poverty look like heaven!!

Will any mod do something about Omar essay like signature ? His crap posting coupled with his ever growing signature makes scrolling on each page a pain. As per forum rules signatures need to be within certain limits or do there rules only apply to Indians ?

I can also post pictures of your country that will look hell look like heaven.

And its not Pakistanis claiming Pakistan is a superpower, it is indians who refuse to accept the fact that their country has half of its population living under the poverty line even though india's GDP is so high.

Half of India?s population lives below the poverty line

Half of India?s population lives below the poverty line - India Tours - Zimbio

What does that mean? Even with a high GDP majority of india's citizens are not benefiting.

And why are you indians so eager to throw your GDP at us, as well as your "shining india" propaganda. What do you expect us Pakistanis to do? throw a party for india? Just a few minutes ago your fellow indian posted pictures of indians burning the Pakistan flag.

Atleast I never posted a picture of the indian flag burning. I always back my statements with reliable sources.
