India To Spend US $74.5 Billion On Weapons During 2012-13

Tue, Aug 14, 2012 14:15 CET

India's Ministry of Defense will receive $74.5 billion to spend on weapons acquisition and modernization of all three forces, according to figures revealed by Defence Minister AK Antony in Parliament.

Of the multi-billion dollar budget, the air force will receive a bulk of budget with $30.5 billion in its kitty. Meanwhile, the Navy and Army will receive $24.7 billion and $19.2 billion each.

Defence Minister Antony said that the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), India's supreme defence procurement agency, had approved a fifteen year Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan (LTIPP) 2012-2027 and five year services.

Capital Acquisition Plan (SCAP) for modernisation of the Armed Forces. The Ministry refused to provide specific details of the plan, saying, “Revealing further details would not be in the interest of national security”.

The MoD is at present inducting and/or upgrading the following artillery into service; Pinaka Rocket System, BrahMos Missile System and is procuring 155mm / 39 calibre Ultra Light Howitzer, 155mm / 52 calibre Towed Gun and 155mm / 52 calibre Mounted Gun System among others.

India is in the final stages of negotiations with Dassault for the procurement of the 126 Rafale fighter aircraft as part of the almost $20 billion MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) programme.

The Air Force is also set to receive 75 Swiss-made Pilatus PC-7 turbo-prop trainer aircraft while the Army is keen to acquire 145 M-777 ultra-light howitzers worth $647 million.

What's going on?

I thought we were to spend 100 Billion in the next 5 years, this means we will be overshooting the 100 billion mark. Lot's of defense companies would love to get hold of that list of planned future acquisitions.

This is interesting- the defence budget announced in March was ~$40 BN and the figure for capital acquisitions in the next 5 years has always been said to be $100 BN so if this is the trend then India is looking to spend ~$500 BN in the next 5 years alone on capital acquisitions .

Isnt india defence budget like $45billion

The figures in this article are over and above the defence budget- the $45BN is mostly for maintaining exisinting force levels aswell as upgrades of existing equipment not really capital acquisitions which is where the $75Bn figure comes in.

I doubt the figures... because army shares major part of our defense budget

That's a huge number for a year, any idea of any new acquisitions apart from the already lined up items?

No where in the article (other than heading) it was mentioned the budget is allocated for 2012-13.
As I did not find any other source to the news so, I seriously doubt its credibility.
If its true then in the next year's SIPRI report India will be the third highest defense spender. :)

Don't just invest in advancement of our armed forces, advance the CRPF, RAF, BSF etc. to the teeth....the threat is within India.....Pakistan won't attack you, China won't but these internal factions are making India bleed everyday.....maintain minimum deterrence for external threat for 5 years....

There are naturally many more much less publicized deals that are to be signed such as NETCENTRIC equipment.

That is the responsibility of the MHA and as I understand (and as we have seen) this is being done simultaneously.

Improve the capabilities of Army, Improve the fighting capabilities of army, Modernization of the army is the need of the hour. Buy more Mi-17 Helicopters for Indian army aviation.

b) Buy some Hi tech air defence system for Indian army.

Itna paisa aa kaha se raha hai :what:

BTW Misleading title. Money is not going to be spent in a year. It will be spent in phazes.

wrong info ...yesterday Antony said our defense budget is Rs.1,93,407.29 ,u can see that statement in press information bureau site

I do agree we need to modernise our local forces... to keep the militancy at low level..
I do agree with China part.. but pakistan will keep using proxy through terrorism. and we need some smart decision to spend all those moneys to the correct area.. only spending will not do.. spend properly and there should be some accountability factor.. :smokin:
