i remember there was a discussion, that IN would sooner or later start looking beyond MiG 29K for future ACs, so this is a logical course of action.

The IN is only interested in twin engined fighters for its carriers, these 57 Rafales will be for the IAC-1.


The LCA is not suited for the naval role as a light weight single engine fighter, the world over navies operate medium class twin engined fighters from ACs.

The IAF has a sanctioned strength of 42 SQNs (to be revised to 45 by 2025-27) but are operating with just 33/34 right now and from 2019 DARIN II Jags, MiG-21 Bisons and MiG-27s will start to be phased out rapidly. Beyond 2020 there is surplus capacity in France's Rafale production line that could deliver >18 (around 1 SQN) Rafales every year. There is a great demand in India for new fighters asap.

Both FGFA and AMCA will come. The FGFA will be ready from 2025/26, the AMCA will not be ready before 2030 and will be replacing all DARIN III Jags, the Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2s and MiG-29UPGs (all at the end of their operational lives from 2031/32).

The orginal IAF MMRCA requirement (126+63) will be met.

Seem India don't have enough money to buy Rafael, you need to stuff your soldiers stomach at first,

The first batch of 36 includes quite all the fixed costs :
- 2 air bases accomodation (enough to receive at least 2 x 40 fighters).
- India dedicated developpments (you pay that just one time).
- initial trainings (after that, skilled Indian pilots will be able to train the younger ones)


So all the other planes will cost india less that 95 euros millions (without support and weapons).

If really india takes much more Rafale, india will have to accomodate one or two other bases, but it will be the same with all new planes.

J20 is designed for F22, just don't bring in Rafale . Don't be pretentious jargon.

J20 is not made to fight against F22 : not stealth enough (see canards and main wings not parallel) and not agile enough (too heavy vs engines power).

The goal of J20 is not well known. Some say it's a long range air strick fighter. Not a air dominance one.

Chill if the Indies are proud of importing and keep on argue on the virtues of buying the best fighter in the world, (I tot it was LCA btw). Let them do it, it only works in our interest if they keep on importing. When a war comes, under Chinese pressure we can probably make the Frenchie stop supplying.
