Naval flotilla to hold exercises with Persian Gulf states
New Delhi, July. 31 (PTI): In a move to seek more "constructive engagement" with its Gulf and West Asian neighbours, the Indian Navy will embark on a series of joint exercises with nations on the Arabian sea coast starting next week.
A six strong flotilla of Western Naval fleet will leave here on August nine for a 48-days tour of the Persian Gulf which will take it to interaction with navies of Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, with the exception of Iran. In the course of these visits, the flotilla will also take part in sea war games off Djibouti off the Red Sea coast with the French Naval fleet and off the Gulf of Oman with the Royal Navy, according to Rear Admiral Pradeep Chauhan, assistant chief of the naval staff.
Asked why Iran was not in their schedule, Chauhan said the Iranian Navy had expressed its inability to undertake any joint exercise at this juncture. For its gulf interlude, the Navy is dispatching its Russian Kashin class missile destroyer INS Rajput, its indigenous Delhi class frigates and warships Beas and Betwa with tanker Jyoti.
Chauhan said after its departure from Mumbai, the Indian warships would break into two groups, with INS Rajput and Betwa holding Passix exercises with the Royal Kuwait Navy and then en route would hold first ever joint manoeuvres with the Saudi Arabian Navy.
