India to Face Significant Cost If Aligned With Russia, U.S. Says

President Joe Biden’s top economic adviser said the administration has warned India against aligning itself with Russia, and that U.S. officials have been “disappointed” with some of New Delhi’s reaction to the Ukraine invasion.
“There are certainly areas where we have been disappointed by both China and India’s decisions, in the context of the invasion,” the director of the White House National Economic Council, Brian Deese, told reporters at a breakfast Wednesday hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.
The U.S. has told India that the consequences of a “more explicit strategic alignment” with Moscow would be “significant and long-term,” he said.
While the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan have piled economic sanctions onto Russia in response to its war against Ukraine, India has declined and instead has sought to continue imports of Russian oil.

New Delhi’s reaction to the invasion is complicating its relationship with Washington, where India is regarded as an important partner in countering Chinese influence in Asia.
Deese’s comments come after Deputy National Security Advisor Daleep Singh traveled to India last week for meetings with officials.
“What Daleep did make clear to his counterparts during this visit was that we don’t believe it’s in India’s interest to accelerate or increase imports of Russian energy and other commodities,” Press Secretary Jen Psaki said earlier this week.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs didn’t respond to a message seeking comment sent after normal business hours.
India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar Wednesday again underlined the importance of New Delhi’s ties with Moscow.
Russia is an “important partner in a variety of areas,” the minister told parliament. “Like all other countries, we too are assessing the implications” of Russia’s war in Ukraine and “deciding what is best for our national interest.”
The U.S. and the rest of the Group of Seven nations will continue to collaborate with India and hope that they can align efforts to the greatest extent possible, a U.S. official said in a briefing for reporters Wednesday on new sanctions against Russia. India and the U.S. collaborate extensively on food security and global energy, the official said.
The official asked not to be identified as a condition of the briefing.
In addition to seeking Russian oil, India is the world’s largest buyer of Russian weapons. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resisted entreaties from the U.S. and Australia to scale back the relationship, insisting that India needs Russian weapons to counter both Pakistan and China and that alternatives are too expensive, according to people familiar with the matter.

Idle threat from the USA as they need to keep as many countries "on side" as they face off against the Chinese and the Russians.

India is right to take a more balanced look at this war as the Russians were somewhat provoked into this course of action.

Uncle SAM still has not realised that the days as sole superpower are gone - even the Gulf Arabs no longer respect them

Americans need India against China.
so they will come with special exemptions for Indiaand won't go beyond comnentary.

Pakistan on the other hand will face tje Indian share of American reprisal in addition to its own for its stance.

Indian foreign policy is dictated by what is good for the nation. This shift took place under Jaswant Singh. Till then Indian policy was self defeating on a number of fronts. It was under Jaswant that India developed good relations with Myanmar and Israel. Relations with US also started improving under his watch.

No one can criticise the current Indian stance vis a vis Russia. West and the US are the last ones who can point a finger since they are the ones who have always kept their interests before anything else. Even now they continue to import gas and other stuff while lecturing others.
Jaishankar and Nirmala have brought out this duplicity. Good part is that Indian diplomacy has not been to shout it out loud but remain low key while doing what they need to do.

Some people had declared India a US lapdog not too long back. Now these guys don’t know where to hide. The problem with these folks is that either it is a lapdog or a sworn enemy. Nothing in between.

What can/would US do against India? Except few cautionary and customary statements nothing else is likely.
Some people can seethe in anger meanwhile. Hoping for something worse.

So does the state department have actual diplomats anymore who understand statecraft and diplomacy? Or do they just have sticks now?

US needs to stop threatening and actually do something against the Indians. India keeps double cross and betraying US and all US does is threaten this and threaten that. Indians take them for desperate fools.

.
India expect US and west help them if china attack but india herself stay away when west need them .funny

It's called looking after our own interests, a concept Pakistan also needs to learn. There are no permanent friends or foe in geopolitics. Just because we have a QUAD doesn't mean we have to listen to these whites americans. we have our own interests, we will support US when it helps US, we will engage with Russia when it helps us. People easily forget we are not an official 'ally' of US/west. Pakistan was an ally for decades.

Obviously they are only doing so -- question is why anyone expect India to just follow the west? A straightforward decision, petrol prices have already increased beyond any historical levels, so why shouldn't we take oil from Russia? Let's not forget huge part of our defence equipments are also Russian.

Because you are bound to west

Or do they just have sticks now?
Stick, shaft, olive branch etc are all part of statesmanship. They are all used from time to time.
US State department seems to be at variance from few FMs here, in using these against India.

There are a lot of amateurs in the US admin who don't know India. Suddenly they are "surprised" because it's the first time they are dealing with India.
Those with India experience understand from where we are coming.
The amateurs will also fall in line with time.

India-Russia relations too strong to let US and the west gain priority. It's not even just the governments, the common Indian sees Russia as a very trustworthy ally, the west not so much. As for China even they would be wary of pushing us further into the western camp, so hopefully would try to improve relations instead of being a bully.
FM Wang Yi visited India for a reason.

Unfortunately, most Indians rather be in the comfort of servitude to white westerners. Deep down, India owe its creation to the British. And Indians understand it’s place according to its creators. So it will inevitably follow the will of its creator.
