It is an increase of 300 km not 500 km. it has come from aerodynamic improvements, air intake redesign and marginal (3%) improvement in fuel.

JF-17 with lesser efficient engine and bigger size has a claimed combat range of 1350 Kms. That’s the claim of these experts who are questioning the same for Tejas.

This is a great news. India has started deploying its own aircraft at some critical conflict points on the border. Within next three years, Tejas mk1 a will come, followed by Tejas mk2, followed by AMCA. Great things are happening. Indian fighters are now equipped with the best in class equipment and technologies, like electronic Warfare, AESA radar, weapon etc.
