Boosting Army’s war fighting capabilities along the line of actual control (LAC), the government on Wednesday has given the go ahead to the creation of a corps including deployment of 50,000 additional troops along the China border at a cost of around Rs 65,000 crore. The Cabinet committee on security headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cleared the proposal in its meeting, sources told PTI.

As part of the plans, the around 1.3 million-strong Army is expected to raise the new corps’ headquarters at Panagarh in West Bengal along with two divisions in Bihar and Assam and other units from Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.

Army chief Gen Bikram Singh and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne were also present at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for providing any possible clarifications, if any, sought by the CCS members including defence minister AK Antony, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid and finance minister P Chidambaram.

As per the plans, the IAF will also deploy its force multiplier assets such as six each mid-air refuelling tankers and C-130J Super Hercules special operations aircraft at Panagarh.

The Army had sent the proposal in this regard in 2010 but it was returned by the government asking the three services to work together on plans to strengthen their capabilities in that region.

The Army will also get a number of new armoured and artillery divisions along with it to be deployed along the northeast region.

The existing strike corps in the force include the 1, 2 and 21 Corps are all based close to the Pakistan border and are mainly armed to fight a land battle unlike the new corps which will mainly focus on mountain warfare.

Not like it will make a difference, China can deploy 10 divisions across the Tibetan frontier in less than a month which is quite impressive due to the terrain they have much better and adequate border infrastructure to support transportation operations (railroad, all weather roads, air bases, etc) than India, If China really wanted to they could cut off the entire north east from the rest of India, not surprising why India bows down and stays quiet during so called "border intrusions/ air space violations"

We have better way to take care of India than merely place soldiers as Tit for tat. ;), I couldn't believe that these people that depend on us for 50% of it water and still think they can be tough against China...one day these people will cry without tear.

China's new war front: Natural resource as a political tool - Times Of India

Although China is the source of trans-boundary river flows to countries ranging from Russia to Vietnam, no nation is more vulnerable to China`s re-engineering of trans-boundary flows than India. The reason? India alone receives nearly half of all river waters that leave China. According to UN figures, a total of 718 billion cubic metres of surface water flows out of Chinese territory yearly, of which 48.33% runs directly into India.

Yawn, you should try & understand what you read . It doesn't say that the water flowing from China constitutes 48% of India's water, it say that it is 48% of the water that flows out of China.......

Not really. Only three major rivers arise in Tibet - The Yarlung Zangbo (Brahmaputra), The Mazhang Zangbu (Sun Kosi) and the Indus.

Since Tibet has low rainfall, almost 80% of flow in these rivers is due to glacial melt and copious rainfall in the Indian Himalayas. Blocking of rivers may have some effect in the dry summer period, but not much.

In fact, if China blocks the Indus, its friend Pakistan will be in trouble. India does not use Indus water at all.

Are you kidding?
What about the power generation that comes from the Indus?
If China blocks Indus, IOK will go dark.

And China won't block the Indus.
Plus if China wants to annex Andhra Pradesh, it can just cut the taps off the Brahmaputra.

Andhra Pradesh???/ Brahmaputra??LOL...

You seriously need to look at an atlas.

And if you are talking about Arunachal Pradesh, read what I said before... 80% of Brahmaputra water is generated in Indian Himalayas.

As for Indus, Kashmir may go powerless... But then you die of thirst...

The Hans out here on this forum seem to be going bonkers seeing this news!! And one worthy says:

The trouble is why do people comment on subjects which they know squat about it? This one above was really hilarious!! :omghaha:

Does this fella even know how a battle is fought and what it entails? Why school kids join serious discussions is a mystery. Don't they know they are making a$$es of themselves?

Haha learn Geography first. And power generation on Indus river is hardly 0.3%-0.4% of total Indian output.
