India To Arm U.S.-built P-8I With U.S. Torpedo

guess i forgot the other reason
russian-indian missile on american plane??.......never gonna happen

I was trying to say the same thing Jon.Americans don't let any country to customise their weapons even if it's necessary. That's one reason they lost in MMRCA despite of having better sensors. But there is no such thing with russian or european equipments.Like russians alowed us fit our own avionics and also from israel, france etc.Now Su 30MKI will carry the indigenous OFB 1000/2000 pound laser guided bombs(cep 1meter)along with the KUB 1500L/1000L bombs. They also allowed to fit the israely Derby BVRAAM and PythonV SRAAM.

Pardon my lack of knowledge but will these birds go that close to the submarine? Isnt it risky? Cant they arm with something that has a range of atleast 100 to 150 kms?
One more question...what is the maximum range of a torpedo?

This is exactly what the US does by adding HAAWC to the Mk54: high altitude launch, using a glide wing, which creates sufficient stand-off distance for current submarine launched SAMs (either sail-mounded Manpads [known examples e.g. Blowpipe] or tube-launched [known example e.g. IDAS]) . This eliminates the need to come down to low level to release the ASW torpedo (and risk detection by the sub, which can pick up aircraft engine noise while submerged) and also provides some horizontal stand-off distance. Most subs don't have anything that can reach out to air targets and when they do, range is no more than 4-20km. No need for an MPA or helicopter to stand-off 100-150km .

HAAWC is a low-cost, self-contained wing adaptor kit that enables the MK-54 torpedo to be launched from the internal weapons bay of the P-3 aircraft flying at high altitude.

How this is a good news buddies?Despite of having better indigenous weapons we have to buy low graded weapons from US.Like our Brahmos is fas superior to Harpoon and NSTL developed TAL or Torpedo Advanced Light with exact same capabilities with the mk54,yet we can't use them on our P 8Is because we bought them from US.

The integral bomb bay will carry free-fall bombs, Raytheon Mark 54 torpedoes and depth charges.
Air-to-surface missiles will be installed on the underwing hardpoints.

I doubt Brahmos would fit in the weapons bay due to its length of some 8m so it would have to be carried externally Air launched Brahmos weighs 2500kg. Don't think wing pylons on the P-8 can handle that weight, they aren't designed for that and also their location is not on the strongest part of the wing. I.e. you'ld need to (expensively) modify the aircraft for a pair of inboard wing pylons or hull-mounted pylons (see IL-38 May example below), which may interphere with the weapons bay. You then also need to consider the trade-offs involved in carrying some two Brahmos. SLAM-ER (4.4m) weighs about 675kg and Harpoon (3.8 m) about 520kg in air launched version. As for the MK54 (2.72m), this weighs 276 to 293 kg. So, you can carry 4 SLAM-ER or 5 Harpoon for the weight of just a single Brahmos.

P-8 Poseidon
Maximum zero fuel weight 62,732kg
Maximum taxi weight 83,778kg
Max takeoff weight: 189,200 lb (85,820 kg)
>> usefull load = 83.8 - 62.7 tons = 21.1 tn (for crew, fuel, weapons and other payload e.g. sonobuoys)
total maximum fuel capacity of 34,096kg when additional fuel tanks are installed in the aft baggage hold
2 Brahmos = 5 tons = one fourth of that 21 ton payload

You'ld quickly start reducing the number and variety of weapons that can be carried on a mission and cut into fuel load, reducing range and/or time on station.

By comparison, the IN's Tu22M3 has wing and fuselage pylons and internal weapons bay with a capacity of 24,000 kg of weaponry alone!.
Empty weight: 54,000 kg (119,000 lb)
Max takeoff weight: 124,000 kg (273,000 lb) ; 126,400 kg (278,600 lb) for rocket assisted TO

Tu142M
Empty weight: 90,000 kg (198,000 lb)
Loaded weight: 171,000 kg (376,200 lb)
Max takeoff weight: 188,000 kg (414,500 lb)
Waeponry is up to 15,000 kg (33,000 lb), including the Raduga Kh-20, Kh-22, Kh-26, and Kh-55 air-to-surface missiles.

Il 38 May
Empty weight: 33,700 kg (74,140 lb)
Max takeoff weight: 63,500 kg (139,700 lb)
Armament 20,000 lb (9,000 kg) of disposable stores, including depth-charges, mines, torpedoes and bombs.

The situation with Klub missiles is pretty much the same: depending on variant (3M54E, 3M54E1, or 3M14E) length varies from 6.2 to 8.2 m and weight from 1770 to 2300 kg). Finally, note that in IN only (leased) Tu22M, Tu142ME (strategic bomber derived MPA) and Il-38ME would carry Brahmos and Klub and with the latter two only as complement to the BAE Sea Eagle or its likely follow-on, the 3M24E Uran (a.k.a. "Harpoonski")...

About Tu142ME:
Max combat load (6 BrahMos cruise missiles, as was proposed to Indian Navy) makes 9.6 tons, standard combat load (8 Kh-35 antiship missiles) is 4.4 tons

a lot of members here seem to feel they know more than the navy which is using these systems and had trials with them . i doubt we can just judge the quality of a weapon system just on media reports.

so what is the navy is getting something from the states ? at least they will have a wide array of Indian and Us and Russian systems .

P-3C Orion
Empty weight: 77,200 lb (35,000 kg)
Loaded weight: 135,000 lb (61,400 kg)
Useful load: 57,800 lb (26,400 kg)
Max takeoff weight: 142,000 lb (64,400 kg)
10 wing stations in total (3x on each wing and 2x on each wing root)
8 internal bomb bay stations
with a total capacity of 20,000 lb (9,100 kg)
Lockheed P-3 Orion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

P-8 will have 6 wing stations (3+3) + 5 internal bomb bay stations.
I figure some 5.5-6 tons worth of armament.
Plus plenty of fuel to go out 1200 nm, stay on station 4h, and go back 1200nm.
After all, it's a PATROL aircraft, not a BOMBER.

IIRC US planes in Israeli and Japanese service have seen modifications, and got domestic armaments.
