Washington, Sep 21 (IANS) India is listed as the third most powerful country in the world after the US and China and the fourth most powerful bloc after the US, China and the European Union in a new official US report.

The new global power lineup for 2010 also predicted that New Delhi's clout in the world will further rise by 2025, according to 'Global Governance 2025' jointly issued by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) of the US and the European Union's Institute for Security Studies (EUISS).

Using the insights of a host of experts from Brazil, Russia, India and China, among others, and fictionalised scenarios, the report illustrates what could happen over the next 25 years in terms of global governance.

In 2010, the US tops the list of powerful countries/regions, accounting for nearly 22 percent of the global power.

The US is followed by China with European Union at 16 percent and India at eight percent. India is followed by Japan, Russia and Brazil with less than five percent each.

According to this international futures model, by 2025 the power of the US, EU, Japan and Russia will decline while that of China, India and Brazil will increase, even though there will be no change in this listing.

By 2025, the US will still be the most powerful country of the world, but it will have a little over 18 percent of the global power.

The US will be closely followed by China with 16 percent, European Union with 14 percent and India with 10 per cent.

'The growing number of issues on the international agenda, and their complexity, is outpacing the ability of international organisations and national governments to cope,' the report warns.

This critical turning point includes issues of climate change, ethnic and regional conflicts, new technology, and the managing of natural resources.

The report also highlights the challenges proponents of effective global governance face.

On one hand, rapid globalistion, economic and otherwise, has led to an intertwining of domestic politics and international issues and fueled the need for more cooperation and more effective leadership.

But on the other hand, an increasingly multipolar world, often dominated by non-state actors, have put a snag in progress toward effectual global governance, it said.

. . . .
Well its good progress from where we were before 1991. But still, we have a very long way to go. I will only consider India a true power when poverty is reduced to minute percentage (almost impossible to eliminate it completely, but keep it very low), our corruption rates are low and our nation is truly looked up on by the rest of the world.

This is nothing, though motivating stuff.

However we need focus on our internal matters more to sustain the status, a small issue on security both internal and external will damage the growth.
GOI is taking some good steps to increase citizen's standards, which is needs to be sustained as well.

I think INDIA deserve a permenent seat in UNSC.......in coming years i see this as REALITY......

Kind of condescending to be honest. Eff 'em. India is on upwards trajectory and that's all that matters. If the ChiComs get over their Maofart issues with us, Asia will rule this century....just as like the majority of all the centuries since human civilization began.

non sense. India is no way powerful. Just bunch of punch on Indian face by US.

And you expect them to 'get over' the issues if you talk about them like this? It requires two hands to clap. If you want respect, you have to show it to others as well. Insulting others wont do the job.

So either delete your post or edit it to a respectable level.

Then you have to wait for at least another 100 years

this is where the author starts building castles in the air.....they managed to calculate the percentage of U.S influence ?....it is unclear whether its economic or military or on what basis.....

In the long term the geo strategic situation seems to be exactly as U.S thinktanks predicted a few years back.....China ..rising and being more and more assertive on its economic and territorial interests.....India still steeped in the Ideals of "peace full rise" therefore it is "identified " as a potential "Swing state of great strategic importance....when India faces a real crisis ( militarily against China or Pakistan which seems to be the only possibility) the U.S plans to step in and provide the necessary diplomatic/other support....in exchange for a re-alignment of Indian foreign policy according to U.S preferences.....Russia still coupling with economic woes so no real threat to U.S influence anywhere.......

The Indian administration should rapidly modernise the critical sections like manufacturing , agriculture , heavy industry sections on par with western standards.....and we should give an extra emphasis on Industrial innovation in technology related fields ....our sunrise industries like Software, Business process outsourcing , Knowledge process out sourcing and bio technology are huge money spinners and we should revolve our economy around these fields
in a big way......

.
this is all US gimmick
does any sane person here actually think that in any survey or study conducted there they would put any one else other than them in the first place

.
What super-duper task India has recently completed to earn this place?
It is not a rocket science that the report is full of false assumptions and interpretations.

Bottom line is, we are still a third world country, though a better one and on positive track.
